Default How do "disappear" unused USB ports

This is new. Unused USB devices are showing up in the
"This PC" listing. Never happened before and I don't think
I did anything (naturally!). What causes this? How can I
make them go away?

Do you have a card reader installed?
If so go into control panel File explorer options and check Hide empty
drives.

You are too stupid to be using Windows 10 so I suggest try using
ReactOS. It is Windows by some weird name but you'll love it as it
requires little or no intelligence!!.

This is a video you can watch how wonderful it is and you can download
it from the link given below:

Seems that it may take a combination of settings to get what you want:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-files/file-explorer-is-not-hiding-empty-usb-drives/96b30c80-02ea-46c8-ae1a-78d820f6ea1a

I wasn't annoyed by the empty USB drives showing in "This PC" as much as I
was in seeing them in my "SendTo" drop-down menu, and the solution in the
Answers forum took care of that, too.

Empty CD/DVD drives still show in the right-hand pane, along with my Virtual
Clone Drives. I can live with that :-)
