How do "disappear" unused USB ports

This is new. Unused USB devices are showing up in the
"This PC" listing. Never happened before and I don't think
I did anything (naturally!). What causes this? How can I
make them go away?

Do you have a card reader installed?
If so go into control panel File explorer options and check Hide empty
drives.

Thanks. Hide empty was unchecked. I changed that,
rebooted, and the drives -still- show up! Good old
Windows....

If you do have a card reader, and you want to hide the empty slots, then

I wasn't annoyed by the empty USB drives showing in "This PC" as much as I
was in seeing them in my "SendTo" drop-down menu, and the solution in the
Answers forum took care of that, too.

Empty CD/DVD drives still show in the right-hand pane, along with my Virtual
Clone Drives. I can live with that :-)

There's a built-in card reader and five 'native' USB ports. Two are
ancient USB3. The reader does not show up as an unused device.
