Default XP SP2 Printer service fails to start with Can not start in Safe M

Hello;
Booted up PC this morning and there were no printers. The printer service
was stopped. When I tried to start it, it fails saying "Can not start in
safe mode." I did not intensionally start windows in Safe Mode, but just to
be sure, I restarted - no sign of starting in safe mode but Printer service
still will not start (same error note). No changes to printers or drivers
over the holiday. MS Updates done on 6/30/06.

Any Suggestions?

System restore to last week and see if that fixes the problem.

Didn't seem to help. Still can't start the service. I don't get the "in
Safe Mode" part.
