W7 / Livemail
Hi
A few days ago, I installed/..."dragged up to date" W7 Home Premium/inc.SP1, (plus 111+ MS updates since that W7 SP1 - including IE versions 9,10 & 11 that all wanted to be installed all at the same time - hence KNACKERING the aforementioned W7 installation - ....so ....as recently advised by Paul - in so many words - "...don't let it pile in all in at once" ...so I started all over again, NOT letting it all pile in all at once, and ALL was LOVELY ! :-), ...onto a new 60gb Kingston flashdrive in my Aunts' PC that contains an antique Asus AliveNF6P-VSTA motherboard with an AMD Athlon dual core 5600+ cpu ....why do I drone on about what's in it ? !!! .....it's such fun trying to keep track of hardware drivers / what's in it / where are they / .....I suppose in another few years I'll be trying to find possibly non existent drivers for a newer Windows platform, for the Ł10 USB 3.0 pcie x1 expansion card I put in it a few days ago ! ....anyhoo, .....ALL went well with Aunt's "upgrade" to W7 Home Premium, ....until a couple of days later, Aunty 'phoned to say that a folder containing a few emails, (...emails were transplanted from her XP Home ed.'s OE6 using W7's "Easy Transfer wizard"), ...have not been "transferred." Now, ...I've been there before !!! ...and I seem to remember an incompatibility between XP Home edition's OE6 email "export" , and W7's LiveMail email's newer "import" !!! but, that was quite a while ago when I was trying to export/import emails from my XP Home editions/OE6 into my W7 Ultimate's LiveMail ! ...which I successfully did but, now cannot remember how ! ....any thoughts hugely appreciated, regards, Richard |

It requires a separate desktop installation. On first use, if it finds an OE store in the user profile it will automigrate messages into WLM's Storage folders. If WLM was on the previous install (XP or Vista) and the pc upgraded the mail would remain intact without the need to migrate since the client would already marked the 'migration bit' as complete. Second, OE doesn't export to WLM - only Outlook and Exchange thus OE6 email export would not apply. Third, W7's Easy Transfer Wizard was written with WLMail in mind thus what you see is what you get. If access to XP OE entire message store is still available then it may be possible to import the balance of messages into WLMail's Storage folders and subsequently moved (copy should not be done since it creates a double indexing problem - moving causes index to delete the items from the existing index and create a new entry in the index for the destination location). If the quantity of emails are small and previously saved as eml files external to Win7(or still availaber for saving externally on the XP unit) then they can be just dragged into the desired folder in WLMail. Attempting to export messages from a saved copy of OE's entire message store after previous migration (via WLM finding OE's Store or Easy Transfer) may result in duplicate emails in the destination location..thus if doing so, it would be appropriate to copy all the existing messages to a user created folder external to WLMails 'Storage folders/Imported folders', verify the copies are present and intact, then delete the entire Imported folders subfolder. Once done, compare the original migration/import with the new import for the missing messages. If present copy the missing to the appropriate folder then organize all messages into the desired folders/user created subfolders in the user's email account(s), once done delete any remaining duplicates. Optionally one can create new subfolders in the Storage folders for archive purposes and start the new Win7 WLMail email account with clean Inbox, Sent, Deleted Items folder. Without further information (version of WLM, single or multiple email accounts, etc.) you'll have to make a decision on the best approach method. Note: Like all versions of WLMail each email account has a separate set of default folders, unlike OE which lumped all email accounts into a single folder structure (Inbox, Deleted, Sent, etc.). If you need additional information or can provide more info not already supplied feel free to ask or add. -- ....winston msft mvp consumer apps |

(which is why I have used W7's "Easy Transfer" wizard. I knew that Windows LiveMail was/is a separate download, and indeed one had downloaded and installed it prior to running W7's "Easy Transfer" Wizard, to "pile in" 'to W7 all that was gathered up in the XP Home ed. archive created by W7's "Easy Transfer" wizard, (installed/run in W7 from external hard-disk). After W7's "Easy File Transfer" ("this is the new PC"), had run, and after quickly casting an eye around Windows Live Mail to check that it had done it's usually good job of duplicating emails accounts, and immigrating OE6's emails/email folders, all seemed okay until Aunty 'phoned to say that an OE6 folder and its' emails, (from XP), seemed to be missing. I have not sat in front of aforementioned PC since her 'phone call, ......actually it was an email where she mentioned that a group of emails seemed to be missing, but, I will be visiting there tomorrow and will be casting an eye over her W7's Windows Live Mail ! ....now let me read you more thoroughly ! :-) regards Richard |
