Is there an upgrade that you can purchase, taking the PC
from home edition to professional? Or do you just have
to purchase professional?

You can use the regular XP Professional upgrade version. There is
no special version just for this purpose.

Are you sure you need to? Are you aware that the two are
identical in all respects, except that Professional has a few
features (mostly related to networking and security) missing from
Home? For most (but not all) home users, these features aren't
needed, would never be used, and buying Professional instead of
Home is a waste of money.

Upgrade to Professional only if you need or want one or more of
these features.
