Seems like we need to publish a weekly list of microsoft updates to avoid. This sure makes it tedious to
maintain stand-alone, non-domain machines.

While some may provide compatibility updates in preparation for or an
ability to properly analyze a qualifying o/s readiness to upgrade to
Win10...the only update to avoid if not desiring Win10 is 3035583.

In fact some of those supporting updates contain replacement operating
system reliability updated files....i.e. not just Win10 related.

And if you didn't install that update, the "helper ones"... you would survive.
