Thanks Kerry, I did that and an interesting thing happened - Spyware
Doctor started doing strange things and suddenly I.E. was GONE!!!!
GONE!!! ?!?!?! SD said some unknown "?" was trying to hijack my browser.
I deleted SD and rebooted. Still no I.E. Evidently SD and MSAS are not
going to get along in some areas. SD sees MSAS as a hijacker when
someone does as you suggested. Then bye bye I.E. I did a system
restore that I set last night when I was sure the Trojan was gone. The
system restore worked flawlessly and all seems to be well now. AND - no
more being hi-jacked to strange websites - so far. And I.E. is so much
faster! :-))) Could SD itself have included a browser hijacker? I
don't know....... :-( I do know my PC is running fine right now.

So right now I have running:

MSAS, CounterSpy, A-Guard and of course ZoneAlarm. I'll continue to run
Spybot and Adaware weekly but have lost faith in them.

I sure want to thank *ALL OF YOU* for your patience and help. :-)

That's great glad you finally got things worked out. Personally I would
only have one antispyware program running at a time. I would use the
others to scan once a week or so. My personal preference would be MSAS
running and use the others for scanning only.

==============================
That sounds ok. I was wondering about conflicts....... I just exited two
of them, leaving MSAS and ZA running.

The search Window there rejects everything I type in to try and get help.
It accepts no word or phrase so I gave up on it. Now guys (and ladies)
how
do I get my critical updates? Or should I give up and perhaps use
Mazilla
or Netscape for a browser. I.E. seems wide open to these infestations.
As
we can see, the Anti-Spyware programs out there are not doing the job of
finding these things - there are simply too many in the wild.

As hard as I've looked I can't find any scum-ware now on this PC that can
be
redirecting me to these weird websites unless one of these recommended
anti-spyware programs came with GASP another Trojan! :-O

I hate to tell you this, but, it's time to wipe and reinstall. You've
gone down so many paths and done so many things, that you can not really
be sure that you've got all of anything malicious off your computer.

## If I don't get this PC running satisfactorily by next weekend I will
probably do just that.

Since you've done all you described, and maybe more we don't see, your
best bet is a full WIPE (completely wipe the drive, not just reinstall
on top).

## It would be a reformat and reinstall.... which I dread. I'll try
anything before I go that route.

Now, before you do this wipe, we need to know what kind of Internet
connection you have - if you have Cable or DSL, then you need to get at
least a cheap NAT Router so that you can go online and get updates and
AV updates and others before anyone can reach your machine from the
internet.

## We have dial-up upload and Direcway download.

So what's next? just forget about her and her problems because people are
scared of hjt logs. That's GREAT help. this group is AWESOME!

I don't think anyone here is afraid of HJT logs. There are many expert
users of HJT on the MS newsgroups.

====================== Brevity snip.

I believe HJT is an excellent tool for finding crapware. Last year someone
spotted something and pointed it out to me. I deleted that entry and the
problem was gone. Maybe it was here on these MS NGs. I don't remember.

If you get a chance to install an alternative browser - I suggest
Firefox HIGHLY. Install it and go to the LAST page i gave above,
click on DOWNLOAD there in the new browser and describe what happens
then as well.

## Wait a minute.... the last page you gave me is
http://snipurl.com/h9oi - there is no download for Firefox
there?!?!?! What do you mean? You lost me..........

No No..

I meant for you to download Firefox yourself (I gave no site) and then go to
the last site I sent you in that post using the newly installed Firefox
browser. =)

So..

Get Firefox downloaded and SAVED on your computer (Don't run it - save it.)
http://www.getfirefox.com/

Then run the saved file and install Firefox.
Run it and IMPORT your Internet Explorer settings - it should ask on the
first run.
Then visit this web page IN Firefox:
http://snipurl.com/h9oi

And download the file, tell me if it works.

You should have an anti-virus as well.

Yes it downloaded but this time I got a different error:

KB896727 Setup Error: Evidently my "service pack is newer" and "no need to
install" this one. I guess SP2 contained it or it auto-downloaded,
bypassing I.E..

BTW this MozzilaFireFox is nice, but has no spellchecker. My iespell only
works with I.E. :-( I'll search around......

Download FireFox from the approved site: www.mozilla.org

=================
Thanks, both myself and my husband downloaded it and set it as the default
browser. What about the Java and Java Script there? What would the safest
setting be,... to not allow it?
