OT - MS's site with XP and new malware patch?
So given current malware and fact MS decided to release a patch even for XP I decided I'd update my two old pc's still running XP and get the patch. Basically have failed for both. Neither pc seems to be able to get thru the hurdle of installing whatever ActiveX control etc. is required and I end up repeatedly at the "can't display page" displayed. Is there some direct download for this new ransomware patch for XP? What version of IE is last version XP will run and where's a direct download link for that. Please - no "upgrade pcs to newer OS version" comebacks. One of them is an old laptop kept as a pc for quests in back bedroom, collect email, listen to music or watch a video etc. It seldom gets turned on. Second is solely for multi-media it retrieves over shared folders on in house network and feeds a tv and stereo in rec room. Neither has the real balls to cope with Win7, some drivers (especially for the laptop) may be problamatic etc. and even with that valid excuse I'd not put Vista on anything if I can help it. |

You can try this in Internet Explorer on WinXP. http://www.update.microsoft.com/wind....aspx?ln=en-us I got through to Windows Update by doing that. The "default" URL used when you click the Windows Update item in the main start menu, didn't work for me. I cannot see KB4012598 in the list there. The list painted very rapidly, which is unusual for Windows Update on WinXP. Others report this isn't working for them. Normally that site should be able to bootstrap, using ActiveX, and the user clicking the bar at the top to install some ActiveX (on that site only of course). ******* The direct link involves the catalog server. http://www.catalog.update.microsoft....aspx?q=4012598 To make the list shorter, you can try http://www.catalog.update.microsoft....x?q=4012598+XP If the latter link is working, it looks like this. Browser in this example is Seamonkey, *not* Internet Explorer. The download is the thing in the right column. The behavior of the catalog server, is not a function of ActiveX, and you have to test browsers until one works for you. https://s22.postimg.org/orlbpeuy9/no...ate_method.gif ******* A worksheet of sorts, for a home user, is here. https://www.askwoody.com/2017/how-to...crywannacrypt/ The methods there, do not compensate for your lack of Safe Hex. If you like to click on email attachments like "you-gotta-see-this.exe", well, bad things are likely to happen sooner or later. The intention of the askwoody suggestions, to reduce the level of damage, if something gets into your home LAN perimeter. Paul |

Thanks all for replies. I tried and it flashed up the page but then went to the error page. I clicked the back button and after a couple of goes I got the page. I suspect it's just very busy. -- Faster, cheaper, quieter than HS2 and built in 5 years; UKUltraspeed http://www.500kmh.com/ |

A direct link would be something like http://download.windowsupdate.com/d/...14fa6ee9dd.exe , i. e. something ending in ".exe". I'm guessing that ones like that are personalised, and maybe expire; however, someone emailed me that one, and it worked when I tried it. I subsequently did follow the official route, and downloaded the file that way, and did an fc /b on the two, and it was identical. [681,200 bytes - which comes out as 666 LB in Windows Explorer (-:] They're the same for everyone. There's no tracking. The files are portable. The installer also does an OS version check. If you install the WinXP patch on a Win10 system, it catches that and stops it. The installer should also update the Windows Update history for you, so you can check it later. There are other install methods, like the method for installing .cab downloads, that don't leave uninstall options. These nicely packaged updates do a much better job. Paul |

I'm guessing that ones like that are personalised, and maybe expire; [] They're the same for everyone. There's no tracking. The files are portable. Good; I'd hoped that was the case. But, I'm now wondering why the majority of links people have posted have been to pages that require the visitor to follow two or three further links. I appreciate the desire to "teach a man to fish" as it were, but in this case (a) the servers for the intermediate stages will also be very busy (as people have found), and (b) there is [OK, arguably] some urgency in this case that I'd say overrides the fishing lesson desire. The installer also does an OS version check. If you install the WinXP patch on a Win10 system, it catches that and stops it. That's good. The installer should also update the Windows Update history for you, so you can check it later. There are other install methods, like the method for installing .cab downloads, that don't leave uninstall options. These nicely packaged updates do a much better job. Paul That's what I thought. So there's absolutely no reason I can see for not giving people a real direct link to the .exe, other than the desire to educate. [Yes, we shouldn't be encouraging people to follow direct links to .exe files, of course. But then, the same (or similar) argument says we shouldn't be encouraging people to still be using XP at all. Just look down near the bottom for links for various Windows versions. They're direct links to an EXE which is an SFX CAB file. |

In general people like to see where it's coming from. |
