Problems accessing and copying my W7's "Backup and Restore"'s createdsystem images...
After doing a 64-bit W7's "Backup and Restore"'s create a system image
to another drive of my system drives in the same physical drive, the updated 64-bit Windows 7's Explorer's Catalog prompt always say "You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click Continue to permanently to get access to this folder." Why do I have to do this every time? Also, if I copy this folder to another drive, keeps to goes in a loop to recopy again. Why? I see this behavior on multiple machines. All drives were in NTFS. Thank you in advance. -- "I got an ant farm; them fellas didn't grow sh*t." --Mitch Hedberg Note: A fixed width font (Courier, Monospace, etc.) is required to see this signature correctly. /\___/\ Ant(Dude) @ http://antfarm.ma.cx (Personal Web Site) / /\ /\ \ Ant's Quality Foraged Links: http://aqfl.net | |o o| | \ _ / If crediting, then use Ant nickname and AQFL URL/link. Haven't you added a right-click TakeOwn option to your menu yet ? https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...-shortcut.html Note, do *not* apply that to the entire C: drive. This is for isolated work, preferably in areas where the OS doesn't normally play. Not for C:\Windows\System32. It's not intended to turn your OS into Windows 98. But for the example you quote, you can smash the permissions on that folder, if you want to get at the VHD files inside. I used to rename those folders at one time, as a means to keep more than one backup image of the whole setup. Once I got Macrium, I moved on from doing this. Macrium was more flexible, than messing with that folder all the time. The folder is protected, so "John" cannot look at the files of "Mary". When the backup is made, either the user must belong to the Administrator group or to the Backup group. These are power-users, who can look at the files of John or Mary. Later, if Ant wants to poke in there, we don't want Ant to be looking at the files of John or Mary. So the folders have appropriate protections to prevent snooping. If you belong to the Administrators group, and you use TakeOwn, the problem is solved (maybe). Good luck, Paul |

I found another answer to do it, but manually and seems similiar with the automated method/trick from https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...f-450990832ff0 .... Bascially in my 64-bit W7 HPE SP1's administrator level account with its instructions: 1. Make D:\WindowsImageBackup\ (where system images are saved) accessible to EVERYONE with full controls which is required in Windows' Explorer. This will only set the first folder/directory accessible, but its sub(folder/diretories) and files still have access issues. 2. Open an elevated command prompt (cmd.exe) with "run as administrator". 3. Type these commands and press Enter after each: takeown /F D:\WindowsImageBackup\ /R cacls D:\WindowsImageBackup\*.* /T /G everyone:F (reply "Yes" when prompted) Now, I can easily access them. Sheesh, MS sure made things harder for power users. -- Quote of the Week: "Individually, ants are stupid. Sheesh, MS sure made things harder for power users. The .reg, you right click the .reg file and select Merge. If you download both a .reg to turn it on, and a .reg to turn it off, then you can remove it later if you don't like it. Both methods use the same kind of commands. You should be able to use Notepad on the .reg and see those same kind of commands. It's a security setting, so you cannot peek in the home directory of John or Mary (unless you're the Administrator). If you have access to the .vhd files, you could use a modern copy of 7ZIP to inspect the contents. That's one of the many ways to do random access, if you need a file out of there. Paul |
