I favor FastStone's FSCapture, but it's not free.

There is a free version of FSCapture v5.3 available from

That seems to be only screen capture, not
video capture.

Second post: I do wonder about the diagonal
image. The program is small, simple and easy to use.
VLC plays the resulting AVI files fine. But if I
use VLC to convert to mp4 or if I load it into
Avidemux, in both cases it shows up as a diagonal
image. The video seems to work. It just displays
skewed at about a 45 degree angle. I've never
seen anything like that before.

(Coming into this a bit late, so I might have missed something).
I was going to suggest another video converter (to mp4), but did you check
out some of the screencasting software listings mentioned below? And some
of them have direct mp4 output, it seems (Open Broadcaster Software and
Screen O Matic):

I covered both of them in my post earlier on this topic, where my list
seems extensive based on the responses so far, but where I'm not sure of
all the shenanigans that each software tries to pull on unsuspecting users.
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/alt.comp.freeware/PmJ0dn3gots
Where, for example, Screenomatic has both a watermark & 15-minute limit.

All the work, IMHO, of this freeware, is going to be in finding the last
crippled of the freeware (and the ones with the fewest shenanigans).

There is only one way to tell which have the fewest shenanigans though.

J. P. Gilliver brought up a good point in that the free screen recorders
don't always save videos in the format you want them to, where Mayayana
brought up a good point that those he tested were limited in some way as to
their output (AVI, for example).

While conversion has its own additional problem sets, I looked up the
converter programs so as to add value to this conversation, where the ones
I found to be good are listed below, with the latest tested URLs as of
today.

o *ShotCut* freeware pretty much handles everything fantastically
https://www.shotcutapp.com/download/
o *Handbrake* freeware is cross platform compatible
https://handbrake.fr/
o *Super* freeware used to be the best (but get the older versions!)
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/SUPER/old-versions (no longer there)
o Others are *VirtualDub, AviDemux, AviSynth, oxelon, totallyfreeconverter*, etc.
https://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualdub/files/virtualdub-win/
https://sourceforge.net/projects/avidemux/files/latest/download
https://sourceforge.net/projects/avisynth2/files/latest/download
http://www.oxelon.com/media_converter.html
https://sourceforge.net/projects/oxelonmediaconv/files/oxelonmediaconv/oxelonplugins/oxelonplugins.exe/download
http://www.sabsoft.com/TotallyFreeConverter.htm

o US/Euro patents expired on ffmpeg so it may also come in handy.
https://www.ffmpeg.org/legal.html

Since the immense cost of freeware is in all the efforts to find the best
ones, my vote, from experience using only "some" of those above, is
Shotcut.

Once you've used Shotcut, you'll never want to use Pinnacle Studios, for
example, IMHO.

I just downloaded it. Clean. I just unpacked the Inno
installer and it seems to work OK. But then it immediately
tried to call:

184.173.250.45
SoftLayer Technologies

Then the window came up and asked me to buy
or "evaluate". That's sleazy. Even the download
name calls it the free version. But the program is
not free. It's just a trial version. I never tried it to
see whether it works.

Agreed. If something has "free" anywhere about it, but certainly in the
filename, it should be free. Not trial, and certainly not buy.

I've nothing against trialware, as long as it is made clear that that's
what it is.
[]
I downloaded the above when shadow recommended it - and there were/are a
lot of things about it that look good (user-settable watermarks, zoom,
varying-during-capture capture area [though how that plays should be
interesting!], and others), but if it's going to not be free, I might
well delete it without even trying.

Any comments?

(It came well-recommended in another thread - I forget what about - not

Comments? I downloaded it and tried it. There's no
video. And the webpage Monty linked doesn't
mention video. No one needs special software
for screen capture. I just use Ctrl + Prt Scr and
paste it to Paint Shop Pro. I guess there was
a misunderstanding about the difference between
video and images.

CamStudio looks like the best to me so far,
except for the glitch of VLC converting it to
diagonal when it converts to mp4.

Screen-o-matic is a sleazeball blurring of service
and software. It's possible to download an installer.
Th download link is way down at the bottom of their
dysfunctional webpage, and below several links to
"launch" the editor online. But then the installed
program refuses to work at all without being able
to go online.

50.16.249.198 Amazon AWS

A window comes up saying "Failed to download
the latest version of the app!" (It actually has an
exclamation point. The call home was blocked by
my firewall. It then goes on to explain how I'll need
to check things like AV and firewalls to make sure
the software can call home.

I'm left slack-jawed by
the shameless nerve of these people. Like so many
of these misleading come-ons, they lie. Their page
specifically says there's a download version available,
but that's just a technicality: You can have a spyware
web service that seems to be online or you can have
a spyware web service that seems to be locally installed.
Probably it's like Photoshop and other so-called
services: The software runs locally. The service part
is the spyware and perhaps ads. Their privacy policy
basically says as much:

https://screencast-o-matic.com/privacy

They collect personal info for use with ads; tracking
data regarding your use of the product; spyware web bugs
in their email. Their business model is spyware and ads.

It's an interesting presentation. I suppose people with
computer phones are used to all sorts of oily demands
for personal info, but this is the first time I've actually
seen a product that pretends to be legitimate software
while actually insisting that I accomodate spyware
and ads. Nowhere in their page or in the installer did
I see anything about the product requiring spyware
and ads in order to work.

OBS doesn't support XP, though it looks
like it might be promising for people who want
it on Win7.

More on screencast-o-matic:

http://www.buzzfile.com/business/Big...C-206-898-8658

https://www.whois.com/whois/screencast-o-matic.com

Big Nerd Software. It's apparently one person. The
website is registered with GoDaddy and hosted on
Amazon.

This brings up interesting issues. Shareware is
often written by individuals or small companies, but
they don't normally ask you to trust them with your
personal info. Yet these online services and things
like phone apps collect a great deal without being in
any position to take responsibility. Screencast-o-matic
doesn't even run their own secure server. They rent
from Amazon. And they share your info with 3rd parties
for advertising or to "improve the service". (Translation:
We share for any damn reason we want to share.)

I saw a related article today at Slashdot that
demonstrated the general lack of security and privacy
with servicey apps:
A data company buys user data from lots of cellphone
app makers. Many of them require location data. They
then make extra income by selling that to data companies.
Some data company sold an "inside scoop" to their
Wall Street customers, using the phone data to
learn that Tesla's factory had upped their night shift
crew by 30%, clearly increasing production. (They
figured that out by defining a geo-ring around the Tesla
factory and counting the number of cellphones calling
home from inside that perimeter! In other words, they
can track virtually every cellphone.)

Meanwhile the clown selling the data to the
data dealer could be anyone, and can legally (in the US)
sell it to anyone. They could be a halfwit college
student making a silly game or a restaurant guide
or a movie listings app. And almost invisibly they
end up selling your location and personal info to
anyone willing to give them a few cents. I see no
reason to think screencast-o-matic is any different.

Yes, I do that too. And eliminate anything that looks like a
downloader.

Yes, well, I automatically block anything like that with my
firewall.
And trace it, so I can undo anything "extra" it might have
done (with Gilisoft, usually only a few benign registry keys and some
entries in App data or whatever).
Do you mean I'm going to have to do it myself ?

OK. I will.
[]'s

It's crippleware. Sticks a watermark in the middle of the
videos. A small watermark that will not mess up the video, but looks
cheap. They could have put it in a corner.
Tried a simple tutorial while playing music with Winamp, and
it captured the sound OK. Put VLC in the capture zone and played a
video, but VLC had a black screen in the playback, so it can't capture
that.
Doesn't write anything to registry, just a couple of files to
the install folder. But then I didn't install, I just unpacked.
And yes, it phones home on startup.

Conclusion: If you are doing a quick and easy tutorial in MP4
format for a friend who doesn't mind a watermark, it works. The video
files are quite small and of adequate quality.
Otherwise, look elsewhere.

Not really much different then the sites require you to download their
installer to download the app you actually want. No way one can know
what that installer actually does beforehand so I just walk away from
all of them and look somewhere else.

Thanks to everyone who answered.

OBS: Free, but darn complicated for a newbie. I was trying to record a
live video stream on a web page, but kept getting its whole web page as
shown in my https://imgur.com/a/vdu33on screen captures. I only wanted
the video part (no black (area/border)s, web page, etc. I must be
missing something as newbie.

CamStudios seem to have a malware in its installer file.
https://virusscan.jotti.org/en-US/fi...job/ydbrecqpne,
https://www.hybrid-analysis.com/samp...6c47392c691215,
etc. confirm it. I will avoid that!

Bascialy, I just need a free simple recorder from my desktop (not just
streaming videos).

It's becoming more common. Microsoft calls it a
one-click installer, but it really means letting a
program go online to download and install the
software. I find that increasingly I have to look
for what they now call an offline installer, which
is the real software installer.

In this case I suspect it was even worse than
just spyware that wanted to control the process.
Even though the installer was a rather bloated
17 MB, and seemed to be a spo-called
offline installer, I suspect that was only the beginning.
As the installer ran I saw files with extension .jar
flash by in the progress. I realized afterward that
screencast-o-matic was probably designed to
install an entire Java runtime, from online, without
even asking.... all just to take screenshots of the
desktop! That was on top of the 50-odd MB the
installer was unpacking and whatever else it wanted
to get from online.

Did you see my post about that? You're downloading
the online installer stub, 2.8 MB, which then goes
online to get more files. The 10 MB real installer from
Major Geeks is fine.

The version you downloaded probably doesn't have
malware, based on the so-called trojans that were
found. They indicate, rather, that the installer may be
setting up adware and/or mining bitcoin, as a payment
for the software.

But if you just want to take a video of a video then
why not get something like youtube-dl or download
helper? The former seems to be able to download
just about any video.

Well, I don't want to download the whole video. Just parts of the very
