Can't set my own icons in my updated 64-bit W7 HPE SP1's start menu folders?
Or am I doing this wrong? I have no problems with the shortcuts though.

Ant wrote:
Or am I doing this wrong? I have no problems with the shortcuts though. If it is a program then it is a shortcut and you seem to know how to change the icons for shortcuts. If it is a document or some file but not an executable (from which the shortcut icon is taken by default) then it gets the icon for the filetype. For example, if you have a .pdf file shortcut in your Start menu then you get the icon for whatever is current assigned as the handler for PDF files. If you want to keep the default icon for a filetype but only change the icon for a shortcut to a file of that type, you have to specify the handler (program) instead with the doc file as an argument. For example: Shortcut to: somefile.txt Gets the icon associated to .txt filetypes (a spiral notebook page with a corner folded down). Shortcut to: notepad.exe path\somefile.txt Gets the icon from the resources defined inside of notepad.exe (spiral notepad with cover, loose pages, and back cover). For that shortcut, you can change the shortcut to a resource from another .exe or .dll file or to an .ico image file. You can change the *program's* shortcut icon to something else, like one of the image resources in moricons.dll or shell32.dll. If a shortcut points as a doc file, the icon will be the one for the handler associated to that filetype. You need the shortcut to point at a program (executable: exe, com, dll) to either use the image resource inside that program's file, or an image resource from another program's file, or a resource from a DLL file, or point directly to an .ico file. There is some way to change the icon for a filetype but that means it changes everywhere for files of that filetype (aka extension). |

Right-click on a folder, select Properties, and for a folder look under the Customize tab for the Change Icon button. It warns that changing the default folder results in not seeing a preview of the folder's contents (files and subfolders). I have not tested what changing a Start folder does or what "preview" you lose. I don't want to test this just in case going backwards doesn't work and I end up having to restore from a backup image to get back to standard behavior. |

Does "not working" mean clicking on the Change Icon button has no effect? That no browse dialog appears to let you select a file (to see if it has an image resources within it)? When I click the Change Icon button, a browser dialog appears. It defaults to selecting the shell32.dll file since that one has lots of image resources. You can enter any file or browse to it. If has image resources, it shows them to you. If it doesn't have any, a popup appears saying that file has no icons. I have a Utilities subfolder under the Start menu folder. When I right- click on it, select Properties, and pick the Customize tab, I see (click on image to enlarge): http://imgur.com/a/9eHkn (looks the same as your pic) When I click on the Change Icon button, I get the browse dialog. I was able to reproduce this in a brand new updated 64-bit W7 HPE SP1 installation in VirtualBox's VM. Also, I tried its %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll's icons. HOWEVER, I found a pattern when I made brand new Start Menu folders: Local C:\Users\tester\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\ Start Menu\LocalTest worked.
