Default Chromium-Based Edge Browser Is Now Available

On 20 Jan 2020, Ken Blake wrote
(in article ):

I run Windows 10. I've always hated Edge but I thought I would give the
new version a chance, so I just downloaded and installed it.

I also hate Chrome, and I greatly prefer FireFox over all the other
choices of browsers.

To me, the most important differences between browsers have to do with
their interface, not with their speed. I also don't care whether what I
consider to be an improvement in the interface is built-in or comes
from an extension.

When I look at the new Edge, to me it looks much like the old Edge, so I
thought I would ask several questions about it that are important to me,
and I hope that someone here can provide some information about it. In
no particular order:

1. Is it possible to have a menu bar?

yes. for certain values of menu bar. Microsoft loves its ribbon. Note: I
tried this out just once, on someone else’s system, as _I_ am not opening
up a MS Store account just to install this. And I already read the bumf:
"REQUIREMENTS: New Edge for Windows 10 is used with an active enterprise
subscription to the New Edge Service. Please contact your organization’s IT
department and ask them if they are using New Edge to secure enterprise
applications and data.” No, I am not ’subscribing’ to ’New Edge
Service’. Bite me, Sad Nad.

2. Is it possible to have a new page, whether invoked from a link, from
a search, or any other way, automatically open in a new tab rather than
the existing one, keeping all already open tabs open?

yes

3. Is it possible to have favorites in a sidebar, rather than a toolbar?

no idea

With today's widescreen monitors, I think that's greatly preferable.

4. Is it possible to have a separate search bar, and not have to use the
bar in which URLs are entered?

yes. launch the search engine of your choice. if your choice is not Bing, Sad
Nad will cry. You don’t want to make Sad Nad sad, do you?

5. Is it possible to change the order of toolbars?

no idea. I didn’t go too deep, Sad Nad annoys me. I’ll stick with
Firefox, thanks.

6. Is it possible to have mouse gestures? I especially want gestures for
close tab, go to the previous page, go to the top of the page, and go to
the bottom of the page.

7. Is it possible to have have multiple URLs for a home page?

8. Is it possible to have a toolbar button for Enpass, my preferred
password manager?

9. Is it possible to have a toolbar button for TinyURL or some similar
program?

10. Any extensions that are particularly recommended?

Any other comments about differences between with FireFox and the new
Edge, and what makes you think either is better than the other would be
greatly appreciated.

No, launching Google opens a Google page. That's not what I want. I want
a search *toolbar*, not a search page. I want it there all the time, not
when I type "Google"

And I'm still looking for answers to my other questions.

what he offers can hardly be called advice, and he posts the same
irrelevant crap the mac and other groups, along with altering people's
posts, as he did here yet again.

that’s because

1 he’s stupid

2 he thinks that everyone is as stupid as he is

3 he has no clue about what he’s babbling about

4 he can’t tell the difference between answering some of the questions and
not answering any of the questions, because he’s stupid, thinks that
everyone is as stupid as he is, and has no idea what he’s babbling about.

Hello Steve

A reasonable question to ask!

I've experience of almost every Windows operating system since Windows
3.1 (I didn't use Vista or 8/8.1) and I do have Windows 10 on my laptop.

I've broken every single one - then fixed it again! ;-)

If you need help/advice you'll be most welcome in MY Usenet group.

I suspect that all my "Is it possible to have..." questions have the
answer "no," and Edge will remain a "no go" for me. But I ask just in
case I missed something and I'm wrong.

1) "Is it possible to have a menu bar?"

There's no menu bar. Not the traditional one.

Tabs go across the top.
URL bar underneath. Icons with dropdown menu ("Christmas Stocking") to the right.

You can add an Extensions Management icon from the command line, when
starting ChromEdge. But most of the settings are in the hard-wired three-dot
menu on the right.

Edge has the same sort of stuff Chrome does.

edge://flags chrome://flags
edge://settings chrome://settings

My machine was acting up at the time, and I couldn't
cycle VMs here properly ("...not enough system resources to...")
which is why I wasn't in a mood to test. I couldn't do anything
here but type :-/

There's really no reason to install Edge on Windows 7, short
of wanting/using InternetExplorer mode, which I didn't test.

The browser passed the PDF test (didn't tip over when reading
the huge PDF file). Which beats some other dedicated PDF readers.

2) "Is it possible to have a new page... automatically open in a new tab"

Link management like that is manual, via right-click menu.

https://i.postimg.cc/N0hzFz9d/open-i...ab-or-page.gif

3) "Is it possible to have favorites in a sidebar, rather than a toolbar?"

No, Favorites are horizontal, and form a row below the URL bar. You can
edit Favorites slightly, by drag and drop on the Favorites bar. You can
switch the Favorites bar off, to save "row space".

It's not in edge://flags or edge://settings.

4) "Is it possible to have a separate search bar... ?"

No. It's not in edge://settings/appearance as an option.

There is very little in the way of mouse control - so far
only Favorites drag-and-drop worked.

5) "Is it possible to change the order of toolbars?"

No gesture. No setting for it.

6) "Is it possible to have mouse gestures?"

Not on the Windows 7 I'm testing on. Really, if they insist
on delivering this software to multiple platforms, they must
be careful to reproduce all features on all platforms. That
kinda puts a crimp in the "I wanna" stuff, as you can imagine.

And remember, this is a "first release that didn't tip over".
They're proud of the fact it didn't crash. Adding bloat to
it will take additional time.

7) "Change Furnace Filters (Every Two Months) - multiple URLs for a home page?"

Cortana didn't hitch a ride on this pig. The design is
"clean" and also doesn't pick up your drycleaning or
make you coffee when you stick your head out of your office door.

There is a home page of sorts. You can set it to display the
MSN stuff if you want. It might be possible to hook up RSS stuff,
and if you ran your own server, have your own server flash up
some gunk about furnace filters :-) In other words, with a CS
degree, anything is possible.

8) "Is it possible to have a toolbar button for Enpass, my preferred password manager?"

If Empass is in the Microsoft Store in the Extensions section
for this browser, then it can be used. Since it's not in
the Store section for that, the answer is No.

9) "Is it possible to have a toolbar button for TinyURL or some similar program?"

TinyURL is not in the Extension section of the Store.

However, a copy of Tampermonkey is, and this allows modification
of web sites when you open them (per-site customization). So it's
not entirely devoid of functions, just none of the functions
are for you.

10) "Any extensions that are particularly recommended?"

There's an Adblock in the store. I didn't test it, and I'm not
an expert on "which flavor of Adblock is the *good* one".

Edge will remain a "no go" for you.

Until they add bloat to it, and it's ruined in two years or so.

In which case, they'll start on EdgeSafari. Complete with

Thanks very much. You provided all the answers that I thought were the
case, but I hoped weren't. Edge remains very much like Chrome; they are
the two browsers I dislike the most. So I'll stick with FireFox and stay
away from Edge.

Many of the things that hoped I could do in Edge could almost certainly
have been options -- for example, favorites in a vertical list on the
left and changing the order of toolbars. But as is typical of Microsoft,
when you use their software, you do it *Microsoft*'s way; you don't get
choices. In my view, Microsoft does many thing well, and many things
very poorly. This lack of choices is one of the things they do poorly. Sigh.

You need your head to be examined if you only know one way to fly. We,
the young people of 21st century, have another way to fly. Our way to
fly is as shown in this pictu

Frankly all old people should consider their existence on this planet.
