There's not much room inside a USB dongle to get much separation of
multiple aerials ...

It's got two antennas, for whatever that's worth.

I have a TP-LINK AC 1200 which connects my PC upstairs to the router
downstairs through several walls, it also gives good speed and connects
with our laptop and our family phones when they visit.

One down side is that it doesn't support Wake On Lan, I have my media on
the PC and play it on the TV downstairs so I either have to leave the PC
running all the time or go upstairs to take it out of sleep mode when I
want to stream, having difficulty walking this is a pain, literally.

From memory I don't think any TP-LINK adapters do WOL, best to check if
you need it.

I don't need WOL. My router is a RTAX-88U.
Thanks to all.

Some comments about chips here.

https://github.com/aircrack-ng/rtl8812au/issues/280

"On the RTL8812AU, up to 2 antennas are supported,
and Realtek RTL8814AU supports up to 4 antennas.

In some cases, depending on the circuit design of the device manufacturer
or firmware, one antenna can be used only for transmission, and the other
only for reception.

Also, some devices work only in one range of choice, others - in two ranges
simultaneously. This also needs to be considered when purchasing devices.

I did find an example of something similar with four antennas. Two
antennas internal, two antennas external. On a chip reseller page,
they claim the chip is a 4x4 MIMO. How it actually
works is at the mercy of the driver code (like if the chip would
fry if transmitting on all four output pads at the same time).
With RF, you can never take anyone at their word.

I haven't managed to find a review on smallnetbuilder.com for the T3U.

It's the usual thing, small size and "might work" versus large size and "might work" :-)
I'd be as worried about the driver quality, as much as the physical silicon.

There's casual mention of the four-antenna version getting "hot",
so the chip with two antennas could well be a better deal. Adapters
where the chip runs hot, they tend to lose some of their output
power after about three months usage. If the main chip really
had external PA chips, then it might be different (they hold
up better as they're typically bipolar chips).

Got it yesterday, driver did not recognise the dongle.
Had to remove and install it twice and after two reboots it worked.
Driver was the latest version from TP link UK website.
Getting good speeds. Now just going to wait for an AX dongle.

On a long transfer, does the unit get hot ?

The worry about heat, is with regard to how well
it operates over time. There have been some
pure CMOS designs in the past that seemed to
degrade on RF output after around 3 months or so.

And by hot, I mean "you burned yourself hot". Warm
is OK. If the device was 65C on the outer casing
(can't hold on to it for more than 2 seconds),
it could be 100C inside the thing.

OK. Just tried to download multiple Linux ISO files with this dongle.
Got full speed, as I am on Virgin media 100 mbit cable internet,
I average out 112 Mbit down and 10 up.
Dongle got a bit warm, not hot to the touch.
