Adjectival Windows 10!
1. Several weeks ago my machine sudenly stopped sleping or
hybernating. 2. Shortly after that I found that Google Earth Pro would not start. No matter how I tried to start it, it showed the hourglass for about a second and then silence. It didn't even get to show in Task Manager. 3. In trying to deal with 2 I found that Google Earth Repair behaved in exactly the same way also. 4. In trying to uninstall Google Earth Pro I found the the updater for Revo Uninstaller behaved in the same way as the Google products. - at about this stage I updated to 1909 with no apparent change in behaviour. 5. I have now found that my Acronis backup software has not started either, for 4 days. At this stage I have no idea of what is going on. A quick check says that relevant drives are OK and "SFC /scannow" reports all OK. It's late now and I am about to go to bed. I would be grateful for any polite suggestions. -- Eric Stevens Chaos is found in the greatest abundance wherever order is being sought. Create a new account (belonging to admin group). This allows elevated commands like normal via UAC. Log out and log in as the new account. Test some apps. If this works, it means the "profile is corrupted" on the original account. The new profile, is proof it can work. The Registry consists of a number of files. Some files there is just one set which are system wide. They have names like SYSTEM and SOFTWARE. Other files are in each home directory at the top level. These registry files are the "profile", the preferences for that user account. They can become corrupted and weird things happen. When you create a new account, it receives fresh (empty) profile files. ******* The OS used to have Software Restriction Policy (SRP). It would allow blocking applications by name. But if that were the failure mechanism, there probably would not be a busy cursor for a couple seconds. It should be able to stop stuff, such that the loader makes no attempt at all to load the program. ******* It could be that when you click a program, Windows Defender scans the Program Files folder and decides it doesn't like something there. And it then promptly stops the program from running. I would hope there'd be a log or a quarantine folder or something to show for this. Paul |
