Since AOL was created, we have used AOL as our e-mail service (it has
always been free) Now a new owner is making it into a monthly
pay-for-service busine ss. So, it's time for me to go! I'd like to
remain a cheap-skate. So what is/are a/some free e-mail client/s ?
Thanks.

Really? I guess you don't know the difference between an email client
and an email service. He wrote "client", not "service".

I also don't get whether you want a service
or software. It sounds like you mean a service.
Free generally means adware/spyware. If you
don't mind that then what does it matter? GMail.
Yahoo Outlook.com. Any crap webmail will serve.

If you do mind, I have a techie neice who likes
hushmail for privacy. I think it's free, but not
certain. I've never tried it myself. Most services,
though, require another email address in order to
get an address. They don't like anonymity. And
no-strings freebies are disappearing. I used to
keep a junk mail address at inbox.com. They wrote
last Fall to tell me they were dropping free accounts.

What about your ISP? Nearly all provide free
email. We get 4 from RCN.

You can also get your own domain and set up email
to your heart's content. But not completely free,
of course.

Finally, a search will easily turn up lists of things
like "top 10 free email providers". If you have a current
address to give them you should be OK with most.
If you don't mind not having POP3 service you'll
have a bigger selection to choose from.

It's only free if you use @hushmail.

I started to use GMX.co.uk/.com (depending on where you are) when I was
moving away from TalkTalk to DirectSave Telecom - some wrestling with
forwarding form the existing addresses to GMX. Also, as POP3 it sends me
everything multiple times, but it works.
I then discovered that DST uses TT's system - should have realised earlier
as it@s unbundeled and my exchange has only TT anyway - so the old addresses
still work.

What do you mean?

AOL is a subsidiary of Verizon since 2015 Jun. AOL is still a dialup
ISP with various plans from $7-27/mo. AOL Desktop is a free internet
suite app for Win & Mac. AOL Mail is a free web-based email service.
Naturally one would have to have some ISP to provide internet access to
use the free AOL email service.

You haven't explained what has changed between you and some 'new owner'.

So, it's time for me to go!
I'd like to remain a cheap-skate. So what is/are a/some

Your situation is not yet clear; what you currently have and what you
think you need. You may be confused over something.

See if there is anything useful he

https://help.aol.com/articles/free-aol-plan-faqs If you're already
connected to the internet and don’t use AOL dial-up, you can still
access AOL software, email and several other services at absolutely no
cost. -- The AOL software works with any dial-up or broadband provider.
Simply start your existing AOL software and set it up to work with your
internet connection. If you’re not sure how to do this, check out the
online help article Can I use the AOL software with another internet
provider?. You can also go to the AOL homepage to access the AOL service.

When you mentioned AOL and free I think the below site would be a good
place to have a look at. I'm currently using Fastmail and they too are
discontinuing there free service in July, so at present I'm trying two
that promise "no ads", yandex.com (has Mozilla addon x notifier code)
and protonmail (x notifier code in pending), both are free.

I use Verizon and they are dropping email service by April 11th. You
have to migrate to AOL (owned by Verizon). They are making it easy if
you read the brochure, not sure if it will be. But they are moving
all mail, calendar, folders, and contacts for you.

No, they are not. Free AOL accounts are still free as they have been
for many years. They have announced no plans to change that.

Where do you come up with this nonsense?

There's also Sylpheed and Fossamail.
Best if you use a client to download the mail so you can back
it up. Three of my webmail accounts simply disappeared and I lost
everything in them. Didn't use them for anything important though...
no big loss.

This will tell you why AOL has to cost money.

http://fortune.com/2015/06/24/verizon-gains-aol/

Since Verizon is acquiring Yahoo as well, that leaves out Yahoo Mail.

That leaves Google Gmail I guess. Or maybe Hotmail or
whatever it's called today.

And by the looks of it, I guess not even ISP mail is a sure
thing any more. What is the world coming to ?

Paul
