unable to hear audio over HDMI
I just finished transferring a bunch of VHS tapes over the MPEG2. I
used a Roxio module plugged into the USB port on the laptop with the VHS VCR output plugged into it. I then used the Roxio software in Win 7. I was able to save each video as MPEG2. I am using an Asus media player to play the resulting files from a hard drive attached to the player over the TV. I first tried my preference, HDMI, but, although I can see video, I am unable to hear sound. The only way I have been able to hear sound is to use the composite video-audio outputs from the Asus into the TV. The videos play just fine on any of my computers. I checked the encoding and they are MPEG2 video with MPEG audio format. What is the reason I cannot hear audio via HDMI and what is the remedy? Thanks. |

You could use one of your computers as a stimulus. The advantage of the computer, is you have the audio control panel and you can select a "digital output" option that would cause audio over HDMI. Then use even Audacity to drive an audio signal over the cable to test. You don't say what your TV is, or whether it's of an era to have HDMI audio or not. 7.1 LPCM might not have any licensing implications, and that should work as a mode if the TV has any HDMI audio capability at all. Maybe the Asus player cannot convert MPEG2 audio into LPCM ? But I wouldn't bother re-encoding any movies just yet, until you prove the TV works. Maybe the TV requires you to use the remote and "select" the HDMI audio from some menu, instead of the composite input audio that seems to work right now ? The TV might be "flexible" and it allows combining HDMI video with Composite Audio, all under user control. Paul |

What tests have your run on the TV so far ? The TV is a Sony LCD KDL-46EX400. It has four HDMI inputs, a USB port, two composite and two video. Since I have all of the videos on a portable hard drive, the first thing I did was plug the hard drive directly into the TV but it isn't recognized. You could use one of your computers as a stimulus. You don't say what your TV is, or whether it's of an era to have HDMI audio or not. 7.1 LPCM might not have any licensing implications, and that should work as a mode if the TV has any HDMI audio capability at all. Well, under the HDMI4 settings, where I have the Asus connected currently, I am presented with the following settings on the Sony: dynamic, standard, clear voice, or custom. Under custom, I can control things like balance, etc, or have the sound coming from the speakers or audio system. I'm not sure what capabilities it has, but it has always forwarded both sound and picture from HDMI from Blu Ray disc and DVD players I have connected. Maybe the Asus player cannot convert MPEG2 audio into LPCM ? The Asus audio settings include LPCM Multi, LPCM Dual, or Raw for HDMI output. I tried all three settings but still no audio over HDMI. But I wouldn't bother re-encoding any movies just yet, until you prove the TV works. That's what I was hoping (use composite audio with HDMI picture) but nothing I've found so far in the menu seems to allow it. Â*Â* Paul |

It seems to be working now, every video playing both picture and sound via HDMI. Not sure why, will have to try and go back and retrace settings. |

See the PC Input Signal Reference Chart for PC and HDMI IN 1/2/3/4 on page 46. PC/HDMI IN 1 AUDIO INPUT Stereo mini jack, 500 mVrms, (Typical) / Impedance: 47 kilohms That suggests there is a 1/8" jack associated with "HDMI IN 1" ??? ******* Your input options a 1) Video 2 - Red/White/Yellow Composite interface (self-contained) 2) HDMI 1 plus PC Audio 1/8" stereo input - (self-contained interface) 3) HDMI 2,3,4 are [digital] video+audio inputs A wild guess is, there's no mixing needed with these, and when you select Video2, HDMI1, or HDMI2/3/4, that lights up their respective input cluster. I've penciled in some stuff here. https://i.postimg.cc/yY3h7Hqh/KDL-46...best_guess.gif At least I think the PC Audio is 1/8". You can't tell from the figure in the manual, what size that jack is. Some of the cheaper ones don't support audio. Really? How is that possible (unless it's a conversion cable of some sort, and not a direct cable)? Hmm. Looks as if I was wrong there. I suspect that I may have changed the cable *and* plugged it into a different HDMI socket on my TV when I had the problem myself. Theound immediately started working and I assumed that it was a cheap cable causing the problem. -- Regards John ) Remove the obvious to reply... |

I'm not sure why HDMI audio started working, but maybe I was using the "HDMI-like" port your were talking about. Anyway, all videos seem to be presenting both audiovisual over the HDMI now. I will save your image for future reference, however, and thanks. At least I think the PC Audio is 1/8". You can't tell from the figure in the manual, what size that jack is. Â*Â* Paul |

I Googled "how to get audio from a computer hdmi to the monitor" and per the instruction, rt click on the speaker icon and go to the playback tab. Select the device you want and that's it. Anyway, it worked for me. |
