The Chrome extension Stylebot comes to the rescue!

For a dark Windows theme. Use Magnifier for standard color inversion in
Windows. Use VLC media player set to invert video colors. And then use
Chrome with Stylebot. Apparently all you have to do is stick this in
your Stylebot global style...

img
{
-webkit-filter: invert(100%); filter: invert(100%);
}

video
{
-webkit-filter: invert(100%); filter: invert(100%);
}

That is a tiny amount of code in Stylebot's world, but it does wonders
if you want a dark Windows color scheme.

Preliminarily speaking, looks like it re-inverts all images and videos
properly. On Facebook, eBay, YouTube, and Amazon. And apparently it does
so more fluidly.

No need for half-baked Chrome re-inversion extensions. Some of them
almost work. Apparently Stylebot is the only extension that allows
properly re-inverting picture and video colors while using standard
color inversion in Windows (like with Magnifier). VLC media player also
functions with standard color inversion.

The only thing that's left to effortlessly re-invert is still pictures
in Windows outside of Chrome, without having to press a keystroke
combination before and after viewing images.

I was hunkered down, but re-inversion in Chrome ended up being easy as
pie.

Had to add the code to Facebook...

i.uiMediaThumbImg {
-webkit-filter: invert(100%);
filter: invert(100%);
}

Otherwise, so far every picture and video is re-inverted while
everything else is left inverted. Better and faster than before.

I haven't been following this well, so bare with me. Do youmean that
ablack and white image on a web page now shows as white and black?
Or a Green & Blue shows up Magenta and Yellow (I think those are the
inverted colors)?

Why do this?

It apparently doesn't know what a "dark Windows color scheme" is. It
acts uninterested (at best) and like it didn't even read my original
post.

No, I don't entertain trolls.

If you are not interested in or don't know anything about "dark Windows
color schemes", this thread is not for you.

He wants to do the old "white text on dark background" thing.
OSes don't always have a good global control for this,
so you have to hack it a bit at a time (fix each application
separately).

I want to avoid reading on the surface of a lightbulb. I believe we have
been misled. Colors are great, but white text on a dark background is
better for reading.

hack it a bit at a time (fix each application separately).

Messing with applications is how we used to do it.

Color inversion provides a global fix. No need to mess with
applications. When all colors are inverted, all you have to do is
re-invert pictures and videos. Since the browser is a major source of
multimedia, re-inverting pictures and videos in the browser is a huge
part of the solution.

When using color inversion, of course some of the colors look strange,
but some of them are close to their uninverted color. And you can use
what's left of color control in Windows to make them look good. Even
though some colors don't look right, using color inversion means you see
everything. Messing with the old color schemes meant sometimes stuff was
hidden on a dark background. And since the masses love to read on the
surface of a lightbulb, most inverted text is white on black.

This will go over the head of people who have no interest in dark color
schemes, so it's pointless to discuss with them.

Damn! Printed books have had it the wrong way round for all those centuries
:-)

Joking apart, I know what you mean: when I first saw black-on-white in GEM
and the Apple II, having been used to white-on-black (or even amber- or
green-on-black) VDUs, I thought that GEM/Apple looked hideous.

Paper doesn't emit light, it reflects light. So reading a book is not
like reading on the surface of a lightbulb. Making paper white is/was
easier and consumed much less ink than making the pages of a book
black/dark. Chalkboards are commonly dark using a white piece of chalk.

Less ambient light helps focus, as long as the view of interest is
clear. That's why movie theaters are dark.
