Lock screen unresponsive
Anyone ever seen this? My computer was locked (as I always do to prevent cats from sitting on the keyboard and screwing everything up), and when I returned to it, my monitor was off and the LED power light flashing (that's not the problem I'm reporting, I know the monitor is old and dodgy - it needs power cycled sometimes to convince it that I'm not actually giving it a resolution above it's capabilities.)
Now, the actual problem - when I re-powered the monitor, I got the photograph for the lock screen, but no clock. When I pressed a key on the keyboard (so I could type my password) it did nothing. The keyboard was fine, I could turn capslock on and off. So I pressed a mouse button. This caused it to make a weird noise - three rapid notes in succession, rising slightly with each one. Similar to plugging in a device, but much faster and a "nicer" noise. Pressing power to shut it down did nothing, I had to hold the power button to force it to go off. On rebooting it works fine. |

Funny you mention this. Twice recently, on the same Win10 desktop, when I powered it up, the keyboard was completely unresponsive, even though it had been working fine prior and since. (I had not thought about pressing the capslock key to see if the keyboard lights flashed - but I did move the USB cable from the monitor to the desktop tower, but to no avail.) Don't remember a noise. The mouse was responsive, but no amount of clicks on the keyboard would make Windows 10 log in. I cycled the power a few times, and finally got the screen. This was a couple of days ago. It's working ok now (AFAIK). I hadn't thought much of it until you wrote what you wrote. If it happens again, I'll post back here. |

I tried a google search but it's not the sort of thing with words that everyone would use to describe it, so I found nothing. Some people apparently got (virtually unfixable) black screens after an update a while back, but that's easier to search for. |

Check out the power Options, Advanced, and disable the USB settings. I have seen the USB settings cause problems with my keyboard a few times in the past. Also if possible you might check the similar settings on your motherboard, if yours has power options. Wake-up settings on some motherboards need to be set to allow keyboards as well. |

And both were active, I could move the mouse cursor, the keyboard would allow the caps lock light to come on, and pressing the mouse button would causes a noise to be made. |

Just caused it by pressing escape just after CTRL-L to lock (I was trying to cancel the clocking and instinctively used escape). Couldn't do a thing with the mouse or keyboard, just had the lock picture and no text whatsoever. |
