How to install USB drive?
USB connection to my XP computer (XP Pro SP3) is generally working fine.
But WD passport and Seagate FreeAgent Go portable drives are not reconized by my computer. The portable driver is not shown in disk management. When checked Device Manager, I see a yellow exclamation mark under "Other Device USB device". Right click update driver Install the software automatically did not find the driver. Could someone suggest me how to fix this USB driver. James |

Could be all sorts of things - but first thing I would do is download/install the latest motherboard/mainboard chipset drivers for your system and OS combination. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

James Considering the two drives you listed, I would check to make sure that your USB port is putting out the full 5v at 500ma. I have a couple of WD Passports, and I know that a lot of older laptops and some older desktops put out enough power to recognize the drive but not enough to keep the drive spun-up. The end result is that Windows will know the drive is connected, but not what it is. I can also tell you that if your USB cable for the drive is damaged, you can end up with the same result. You can not just use any USB cable with the drive. Sincerely, C.Joseph Drayton, Ph.D. AS&T CSD Computer Services Web site: http://csdcs.site90.net/ E-mail: |

Of course it does, as does every other PC or laptop. However, assuming that the problem lies with Windows and ignoring the possibility that the portable disk could be at fault will greatly extend the agony of the trouble-shooting process. |

James Just a thought: Did you notice whether it had been assigned a drive letter? I've come across this a couple of times and each time it was because the drive hadn't yet had a drive letter assigned to it. Assign the drive letter and all is well. -- -- Live in the moment; be open to the possibilities that life has to offer. |
