Default Hi, backup the Windows folder, any good to use as a backup?

I have used Nero BackItUp for a year now not especially for a partition or
Windows partition backup application but I used it to backup folders and then
had them written to RW DVDs and it works ok.
I am wondering, can I use less DVDs by backing up the Windows folder only.
Maybe if I need to reinstall XP I can install from the original cd then
install updated files from the backup of the Windows folder I use somehow.
I am thinking about the updates to Windows XP Home Edition for when the
support period ends for XP so want a full backup available.

* May God Bless You on this Sunday
The Holy Spirit is everywhere, pray and ask Him to bring Jesus into Your
life and HE WILL COME. Pray again, he came to me and I am a sinner Amen.

Default Hi, backup the Windows folder, any good to use as a backup?

Look into an imaging program and an external Hard drive.
I use Acronis True Image which lets me create an image of my HD and place
that image
on an external drive. It also allows me to create an emergency Boot disk
that does not use XP.
So if a problem arises where I can not start XP I can boot from the
Emergency Boot disk and restore that image from the
external drive back to the internal drive. Acronis can also do normal type
backups/
Do a Google and read up on it

Default Hi, backup the Windows folder, any good to use as a backup?

I did get a copy of the last issue of free Acronis True Image from Acronis
but for some reason now the CD application I could use ok before seems to
make the mouse cursor behave oddly so I use the keyboard and from the Add a
comment page in the backup the application does nothing. I can not write a
comment in that windows and I can not get the cursor to move to the Next
button which I think is greyed out. I have practised with Nero BackItUp
before and it has worked and have just completed writing to 4 DVDs a backup,
but I only copied the Windows Folder and some of the installation files I
want for a future reinstallation and not the entire Disk.

It will not likely do you much good to backup your Windows folder.

As mentioned, you can clone your entire drive to another.

Acronis has the option to make a bootable cd to be used for cloning
and you do not have to used the installed version to do so...
but that will not be possible with the free version.
As far as I know Acronis has a free trial version that expires in 30
days (IIRC) but does not have an actual free version

Otherwise, the best thing to do is simply backup all of your data.

Your operating system can always be re-installed in the event of a major
failure..but your data...once it's gone...it's gone!

umwhat:

If you're interested in an opinion:

On a few occasions, I have had to reinstal the OS, and lost all my data.
I bought Acronis, and it has saved the bacon for me at least once.

Booted my computer from the Acronis Emergency Boot disk, and restored the latesr Acronis back-up.
In less than half an hour, my computer was back to normal (before I screwed it up).
I do place the back-up files on an exrenal HD.

Cheers!
