Default start button shortcut list

the issue is that the start button shortcut list doesn't update as I run programs. Even though I have "small icons" checked and the start window is almost the full height of the screen (with a "number of programs on start list" set to 12). The same 4 or
5 programs appear there all the time with no change, no matter which programs or how many I run. I would love to have this feature back working again. I'm presuming it is a registry tweak or something I've inadvertently changed that I shouldn't have. An
yone have any ideas?

[[Tip: Windows XP can only display up to eight most-often-used programs on
the left side of the new Start menu. If you'd like to see more at a time (up
to 14), decrease the size of the icons displayed there. Right click the
Start button (or a blank area of the Start menu) and select Properties. On
the Start Menu tab, click the Customize button next to Start Menu. On the
General tab, select Small icons, then click OK twice. ]]

Default start button shortcut list

wow lots to read but I can't resolve this yet. I did learn that there are 2 lists on the left side of the "start" display. On the top is a "pinned list" and underneath that is an MFU (most frequently used) list. They should be seperated by a line. Our
line is right down immediately above the "all programs" button so for some reason, it doesn't seem to have room for any programs in this MFU list (which should change according to the number of times a program is used.) I did add checkmarks to have the IE
and Outlook shortcuts included here and rebooted and I long ago downloaded SP1. I'm right up to date that way but no matter what program I use, nothing shows up in the MFU. Any other ideas? or ways to reset it. btw, the "clear list" button never does g
ray out after clicking it.

I use the Classic Start Menu. I have experimented a little here, changed to
XP Start Menu and Clear List does not become unavailable for me either. The
Clear button works fine in the Classic Start Menu.

the issue is that the start button shortcut list doesn't update as I
run programs. Even though I have "small icons" checked and the start
window is almost the full height of the screen (with a "number of
programs on start list" set to 12). The same 4 or 5 programs appear
there all the time with no change, no matter which programs or how
many I run. I would love to have this feature back working again.
I'm presuming it is a registry tweak or something I've inadvertently
changed that I shouldn't have. Anyone have any ideas?

Default start button shortcut list

I use the Classic Start Menu. I have experimented a little here, changed to
XP Start Menu and Clear List does not become unavailable for me either. The
Clear button works fine in the Classic Start Menu.

wow lots to read but I can't resolve this yet. I did learn that
there are 2 lists on the left side of the "start" display. On the
top is a "pinned list" and underneath that is an MFU (most frequently
used) list. They should be seperated by a line. Our line is right
down immediately above the "all programs" button so for some reason,
it doesn't seem to have room for any programs in this MFU list (which
should change according to the number of times a program is used.) I
did add checkmarks to have the IE and Outlook shortcuts included here
and rebooted and I long ago downloaded SP1. I'm right up to date
that way but no matter what program I use, nothing shows up in the
MFU. Any other ideas? or ways to reset it. btw, the "clear list"
button never does gray out after clicking it.

Default start button shortcut list

Thanks for the help Wes

It just doesn't do what it should do so I'm probably going to go back to the "classic" setting too, at least for now. Maybe someday it will start working again on it's own.
