lost in Windows 10....
In normal use, my computer works just fine. No visible problems except:
For some time now, Windows 10 hasn't recognized my old HP 1200 series combo printer as a printer. It knows it to be a scanner and it works that way but not as a printer. It always worked fine, except with any error (eg no paper) I would have to uninstall it and reinstall it to make it work. One time I reinstalled it and it became a scanner only. THE FAULT IS NOT WITH THE PRINTER because we can hook it up to my wife's Windows 10 computer and it works fine. I decided it was time to fix this problem and here is how that has gone: 1 I brought up a similar 1200 printer from the basement. I plugged it in and my computer immediately recognized it as a printer and I set it to be the default printer.I tried to print something and it took right off, BUT it didn't suck in the paper (that IS the fault of the printer and maybe why it was in the basement). "No paper error" and, as always, I had to uninstall it and reinstall,BUT then it was only a scanner again as with the first printer. Tried repeatedly but no go. 2 Looking for a solution, I tried command prompt then sfc /scannow Result: ...did not find any integrity violations. 3 Next. Command prompt then DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth Result: It took right off scanning but stopped at 87%. I left it on overnight, but it never did continue. This morning, I closed the command prompt box and started again. I tried several times with the same result: I moves as far as Image Version: 10.0.14...(whatever) but stops there and never starts the scan. 4 Sometime during the above 2 steps, I can now no longer open "devices and printers". I can still get to Device Manager but what happened to Devices and Printers? I did restart the computer a couple of times early on, but I admit I didn't do it here at the end of the process. (Don't recommend that I buy a newer printer, because the problem is with Windows.) By the way, if I plug in the printer now, I get the "new hardware" sound but the message doesn't appear. What's going on? |

I see Thunderbird is now calling that "Followup". The reason is that I use here my original address from 1995! Ages ago I limited it to known senders due to massive spam. |

What's going on? There are a couple of Win10 "servicing drivers for testing" (whatever the hell that means) listed he http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=HP%20Laserjet%201200 One of those might work, or maybe a Win8/8.1 driver installed in compatibility mode. Here's a method I used in Win7 for problematic older printers (edited for Win10 menus): A. Go to SettingsDevicesPrinters & Scanners, click on "Add a printer". Click on "The printer I want isn't listed." (If it is already listed, jump to paragraph "B".) Select "Add a local printer", then "Use an existing port" then click Next. When the "Install the printer driver" window comes up, click on "Windows Update" near the bottom. It may take a minute or two to finish, depending on your connection. Scroll down to "HP" in the left pane, then find your printer series in the right pane. B. If the printer already shows in Settings, then go to Control PanelDevices and Printers, then highlight it and pick "Print server properties" at the top of the page. Go to the Drivers tab, then click Add.. at the bottom of the page. Then click Next, Next, then "Windows Update" and follow the same procedure as before. You can also remove any driver(s) that didn't work from the Drivers tab using this method. Hope this isn't too confusing, and that some of it helps :-) -- SC Tom |

When I first started with newsgroups, I put my email address in the headers. Too many people would send email instead of replying to the group. Thunderbird in the newer versions, has an icon editor. It allows you to change the buttons in the bar above the three-pane view. And you can add a button which is more appropriate for newsreader usage ("reply" versus "followup" or whatever). There are more buttons, than there is space to put the buttons, and I'm guessing that's why they do it that way. You can try them out in alt.test, make a post, reply to your own post, see if the posting looks correct, and so on. Dial in your newsreader, until you're happy with how it works. Each tool I use here, has only one function. I do email in a separate tool. And newsgroups have their own tool. I can never send a "letter to grandma" to alt.flame by mistake, as a result :-) Paul |

Steve, Have you tried the Win10 Troubleshooter? Just type "troubleshoot" (without quotes) in the Search window and then select Printer under "Get up and running". If that doesn't fix it, then also run the Windows Update troubleshooter. That clears out a lot of problems that are seemingly unrelated to any update process. Also and you may have already tried this - "HP Print and Scan Doctor" diagnostic tool and the "Support Tool". ( https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02073861 ) I've found them to be very useful but can be somewhat confusing at first and may take several tries to get things cleaned up and working. As a reminder, Win10 has taken over the scanning tasks for HP printers/scanners so if you have downloaded and installed the full HP install software - uninstall it and let Win10 discover the printer. But if you do end up downloading drivers, the HP site ( https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers...r-series/29789 ) shows Win10 drivers available. Also, deselect the option under "Printers & Scanners" near the bottom of the page that states "Let Windows Manage my default printer". That has been problematic in environments with more than one printer and Win10 considers XPS Document and PDF printers to be printers that can end up being your default printer. It also helps after doing some diagnostic and finding it still has a problem is to power cycle the printer and reboot the computer so Win10 will go thru a full discovery scan. Try staying with the same USB port. Bob S. |

Here's a method I used in Win7 for problematic older printers (edited for Win10 menus): A.Â* Go to SettingsDevicesPrinters & Scanners, click on "Add a printer". Click on "The printer I want isn't listed." (If it is already listed, jump to paragraph "B".) Select "Add a local printer", then "Use an existing port" then click Next. I clicked on it and there is a lot of information. It starts at the top with "device is connected" then a big page of more information that looks all normal to me. In device manager, you say "There is a tab in the properties...". What properties? What tab? The printer should be in there somewhere, even if it has a "yellow triangle" symbol on it because the driver isn't working right. In this example, there's a scanner which isn't working right, and has a yellow mark. Right-clicking the yellow mark item, and selecting properties from the menu, should open the dialog shown at the top of the web page. https://www.raymond.cc/blog/how-to-f...amage-code-19/ This one shows a yellow mark for an unknown device, which is actually known because it has a name. Sometimes it won't have a name, but you can still get a VID/PID or VEN/DEV from the hardware ID property. https://www.howtogeek.com/193798/how...evice-manager/ The Events tab in the Properties box in Windows 10, shows a series of Events. My device manager has at least four classes of sequences in there, making it quite confusing. For example, when I plugged in a new SSD, the Events says "attempting to migrate device", when the damn OS has never seen the device before. The word "migrate" is only supposed to apply when the device driver is installed on an OS version upgrade. When the OS went from 15063 to 16299, *that* should cause a migration entry (with an appropriate date stamp) done during the OS installation. I think somebody already mentioned the difference in behavior between an "in-box generic Microsoft driver", versus the manufacturer driver. If the in-box one is acting up, the act of installing the manufacturer one may create a new entry, and maybe that will take enough registry rubbish out of the way, so it'll work. I don't really thing DISM/SFC will help in cases like this. And manipulating the inbox drivers, to make them go away, is all but impossible. So that leaves overriding with the manufacturer driver. I think I did that with my RealTek audio. I installed a download from the RealTek site, so I would gain one additional control in the ReakTek control panel. A setting missing from the Microsoft interface provided. Even though the OS has a fair number of its own drivers staged, there are occasions you have to step in and intervene. I don't do that for everything, just the things that annoy. Paul |

Bob S. Bob, I had tried troubleshooting from the devices and printers panel and I guess it never occurred to me to try the main troubleshooter. So I went to the main one and selected printer. It urged me to do it as administrator, so I did. It said something about waiting for spool..... and that went on for several minutes so I canceled it. Then I tried Windows Update troubleshooter. It found problems and needed me to restart the computer. I did that and the usual warning came up about it was updating and DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER. That went on and on. An hour later it was still working on it. I started wondering what would happen if I had to pull the plug (literally). It was bedtime anyway so I figured I would let it go over night. I got up this morning and found it in sleep mode. That was encouraging. I woke it up and checked devices and printers. There was my printer back under the printer section. However, I still couldn't make it my default printer because it was back to being only a scanner again. I pulled the USB cord, removed the printer from the devices and printer window. I plugged it back in, windows detected it and put it back. I right clicked it and THERE! I could set is as my default printer! I tried printing something and it worked just fine! Thank you Bob for pointing me in the right direction! |

Steve, Glad that worked out for you. To me it sounds as though your computer has been hanging up on one or more updates in the background since it was unable to select a default printer. In the Search bar type reliability and that will bring up the Reliability Monitor and history report. It can be viewed for days or weeks. I'm betting that you will see a yellow triangle in each day slot for the past few weeks. That reports shows problems that can be clicked on that can provide some clues as to what went wrong and when. The key point is that some windows updates have been problematic since the new Creators Update (even before but...) this version has been extremely sensitive to older hardware it seems. I now use the Windows Update troubleshooter for just about every unexplained hiccup. It clears out it's cache and does some other housekeeping so it normally does find some sort of errors to report even though they may not be problems. The bottom line, it helps to get things back to running. Paul (if he's reading this) may be able to provide us some insight into the update problems since he does a lot more deep diving than I. Also, get to know the new scanner software built into Win10, I think you'll like it. Bob S. |
