Windows Backup question
Win7-32-Pro
I have been making backups with Macrium, which seems to work fine. I decided to look at Windows Backup. Control -Backup and Restore displays "Windows Backup has not been set up" and gives a link "Set up backup." Clicking that link results in "The backup application could not be started due to an internal error. The service can not be started either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it (0x80070422)," Services shows Windows Backup as "Started." There is a Toshiba USB-3 drive attached. Macrium finds it each night. What am I missing? -dan z- -- Someone who thinks logically provides a nice contrast to the real world. (Anonymous) |

That would be the correct thing to do as you would not want to run two separate backup programs. |

Highly unlikely I would say. I have Macrium Reflect Free 6.x installed and when I click on the link "Set up backup." a dialogue opens asking me where I would like to save the backup. So it works. -- s|b |

That is not the same as Macrium Backup. |

That would be the correct thing to do as you would not want to run two separate backup programs. Macrium doesn't interfere with W7Backup. NTI on the other hand (on some OEM OS installations) *does* interfere and breaks the buttons on the interface. The service that cannot be started, I'd want to know what service that was, purely to understand how serious the condition is, and whether it's going to break anything else. Most backup programs use VSS, and unless Macrium has said something like "VSS Broken, using PSSnap instead", it's probably not a VSS problem. But right off hand, I don't know what other services it would need. It could be using a service, if the backup function has a "schedule" and they decided to manage the times involved, with their own service. When I've used W7 Backup, I only used the "Full Image" flavor, and not their file by file version (scheduled backups of my Download folder say). Maybe Event Viewer has some record of what service did not start ? You can do a backup with wbadmin if you want quick proof that VSS still works. This is the equivalent of "System Image" under Windows 7 Backup - the System Image function always wants to back up C: and System Reserved, so you can never really do a "small" backup this way. This command, as prepared, is slightly redundant, in that two of the command line parameters are asking that C: be backed up, but the actual backup only has the one copy of C: in it. You would do this as Administrator or from an account with "Backup Group" capability. On a regular (non admin group) account, a command like this would likely fail. wbAdmin start backup -backupTarget:E: -include:C:,D:,F: -allCritical -quiet That puts a new folder at the top level of E, which includes the contents of C,D,F and System Reserved. Make sure you have enough space on E before copying C,D,F to it. Paul |
