Maybe I'm misunderstanding things, but on my XP PC, this has absolutely
no effect on the size of the desktop icons. Any suggestions? [I never
knew there was supposed to be this facility.]

I don't have access to an XP PC to check this (I have a Win7
interface).

Right click on a blank area of the desktop.
Click "View". Do you get three options:
(Small icons, Medium icons, Large icons)?

No. After the right-click, there is no 'View' option.
[Note: This is XP I'm using. I haven't tried W7 (yet).]

It's there on 7, with the three icon sizes.

Anyway, I've sussed it!

The following seems to be the way - but note that it changes icon Size,
Horizontal Spacing and Vertical Spacing INDIVIDUALLY:

On the Desktop, right-click and select Properties. This takes you to
Display Properties.

On 7, it's right-click, Personalize, Window Color! I only found that by
accident. (And if you're using an Aero theme, you then need to click
Advanced, too.)

[Alternatively, you can get to Display properties via Start, Control
Panel, Display.]

Select the Appearance tab, then Advanced. This takes you to Active
Window.

I was amused when it became "Advanced"; it wasn't, under, IIRR, Windows
95. But users of (IIRR) '98 and later had to be protected from it (-:.

Under Item, scroll down to Icon, or Icon Spacing (Horizontal), or Icon
Spacing (Vertical), and set the size you want. Then OK. This takes you
back to Active Window.

Select Apply, the OK - and that's it.

It's still there in 7, too, but changing icon _size_ doesn't actually do
anything! Oops. (Also, in there, some other things - such as tooltip
colo[u]rs, and possibly other colours - can be changed, but have no
effect if you're using an Aero theme. Though the two icon spacing ones
do have an effect [you can try them with the Apply button without having
to come all the way out].)

To be honest, I've never really explored some of the standard options.
It's amazing what you find, and how useful some of them are!

Yes indeed! One I found useful for an older friend who isn't too precise
with the mouse was window border width; she can now resize windows
(which _is_ something she wants to do occasionally) more easily as
they're easier to hit.

However.......
While the Icon Size setting certainly works, I'm not sure id the
spacing(s) do. Possibly they do if the size isn't too large for the
spacing (must experiment).

However, after a reboot the icons ARE smaller AND spaced more closely -
so it seems to work.
