Default Network Drives not connecting at startup

*****************************
PROBLEM:
I recently upgraded my system from Windows 2000
Professional to Windows XP Professional. When I log in,
I have permanent drives mapped to Active Directory, a
Windows XP peer workstation, and two different NetWare
NDS trees. When I logged in under 2000, the system would
pause and prompt me for the userid and password for any
permanently mapped drive that was outside the primary NDS
and AD trees that I was logging in to. As soon as I
upgraded to XP, this no longer happened. Now the system
just logs me in, and marks these drives as "unavailable"
with a red X. I have to go to My Computer, click on each
of these drives, and then the sytem prompts me for the
userid and password (although it remembers the userid).
This is getting to be very annoying--I have at least six
of these drives, and I have do to this every time I log
in. I know that probably the Fast Logon Optimization is
partly to play, and I have modified the local Policy to
change the "Computer Configuration\Administrative
Templates\System\Logon" to "Always wait for the network
at computer startup and logon", but this has not changed
the behavior of the logon sequence. I have searched (and
searched, and searched...) the web and your support site
for more information on this, but I cannot find the
answer. I have searched the registry for the
words "logon", "wait", "prompt", and other associated
words, but I cannot find anything to fix this. I even
reformatted my computer, and installed XP from scratch to
see if I could modify this behavior, and I cannot get the
stupid OS to wait and prompt me for these logons before
the desktop comes up. Please help! I just want XP to
act like 2000 did during the logon sequence--I can't
believe that it should be this hard!!

Thanks, Jack

ACTION TAKEN:
I submitted this to Microsoft under SRZ040408001008.
Below is a transcript of the Chat Session I had with the
Microsoft Support agent. Basically, they said that they
could not resolve this problem for free--they wanted $99
to fix the bugs in their own softwa

Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP Chat Support
The Windows XP Chat Session has been accepted.
{Leo M.} Thank you for using Microsoft Windows XP
Chat Support. My name is Leo. May I address you as jack?
{Jack Turner} Of course
{Leo M.} Thanks Jack Just to make sure I have the
correct information so I can send you a summary of our
chat session today, I show your address as
. Is this correct?
{Jack Turner} Yes, that is correct
{Leo M.} I show your incident number as
SRZ040408001008 is this correct or do you have another
one you have been working under?
{Jack Turner} Well, I started under #SRZ040407001092,
but the tech there could not help me, and would not
escalate the problem, and told me to resubmit
{Leo M.} Ok, thank you Jack, Please wait a few
moments while I look up your case information and problem
description.
To ensure you receive both timely and appropriate
support, it will be determined if your issue can be best
resolved in the Chat Support environment. In the
meantime, if for any reason you need to reconnect to Chat
Support regarding this issue, please use your SRZ case
number.
To reconnect, please do the following:
1) Open "Help & Support"
2) Choose to "Get Support"
3) Choose to "Get Help from Microsoft"
4) On the next screen, choose the option to "View My
Support Requests"
5) Click on this SRZ Case number in the ID list and then
select Chat.
For any new issue not related to this one, please make a
new case by choosing the "Ask a Microsoft Support
Professional for Help" option.

I will be right back with you and thank you for your
patience.
(LONG WAIT)
{Leo M.} Jack, so the issue we are going to work
on as I understand it is to make sure we are able to
connect network drives automatically when logging into
XP. Is this correct?
{Jack Turner} Well, I don't really expect (or want) XP
to automatically remember the userid and password to
enable it to reconnect *automatically*, but I DO want the
logon process to halt during the reconnection sequence
and prompt me for the userid and password for any
permanently mapped drive, just like Windows 2000 did
{Leo M.} Great, Jack, please keep in mind that as
we troubleshoot this issue together, we may discover that
the problem actually isn't Windows XP related. If this in
fact is the case, it may be necessary for me to refer you
to another support area for further assistance. I just
want to make sure you're aware of this possibility, and I
will keep you informed throughout our chat session today
if indeed the problem does turn out to be non Windows XP
related.
{Leo M.} So when you log into the map drive inside
of windows XP. Is it asking you for user name and
password?
{Jack Turner} I do not know that I agree with your
assessment that this is not XP related. I take a Windows
2000 workstation, and it logs in just fine, pausing for
the password prompts, and the only thing I do is upgrade
to Windows XP, and it no longer prompts me. I know that
the Fast Logon Optimization may have something to do with
this. As I mentioned in my original case, I did make the
policy change that is supposed to help, and it did not
help.
{Jack Turner} BTW, I am not the only person who is
having this problem. In my search for a *cure*, I have
encountered MANY people who have this same probem. There
has not been a solution posted (that I can find) to date.
{Leo M.} ok! i'll do my best to find a resolution
for this issue but let me make sure exactly what's going
on
{Leo M.} did you get my last question?
{Jack Turner} Cool! I appreciate your assistance. Oh, I
see it now (I didn't before). Anyway, once the system is
fully up, I open My Computer, and click on one of the
permanently mapped drives (which is marked "unavailable"
with a red X), and a password prompt does appear, with
the userid listed, but not the password.
{Leo M.} so when you type the password. Are you
able to access that drive?
{Jack Turner} Oh yeah. That has not been a problem. The
problem is that I have to do this every time I log in,
for about six different drives. I did not have to do this
under Windows 2000.
{Leo M.} I see! Are you in a domain?
{Jack Turner} Yes, we are in an Active Directory
domain. I am also authenticating to two different NDS
trees, and one XP peer share.
{Jack Turner} But I was in a Domain in Windows 2000
also. The only change was the upgrade to XP.
{Leo M.} Well , unfortunately we do not have chat
based support for professional issues at this time. In
addition, due to the sensitive nature of issues that
occur in a professional environment, and for the best
resolution to these types of issues, which involve the
advanced use of Windows XP Professional, I would like to
recommend that you contact our Professional Support
group.
{Leo M.} Our Professional Support group is trained
specifically to handle these particular issues, and they
are best able to answer your questions. You have two
options, Jack, for contacting Professional support. You
may contact them by either calling phone support at 1-800-
936-4900 or emailing our web based Professional support,
which you can do through Help & Support. Please contact
either of them at your earliest convenience for support
on this issue. I apologize I am unable to help you at
this time and I will therefore close this case as a non-
decrement so you are not using a personal support
incident.
{Jack Turner} So you mean that this cannot be escalated
to that group, and that I have to re-submit, just like
that last tech with whom I spoke.
{Leo M.} It's a total different department but In
order to resolve your issue, we will need to have you
contact our Pro support group, as they are trained
specifically to deal with this type of issue. Therefore,
what I would like to do is to call and transfer you to
the queue for Pro Support Group. As we want to provide
you with the best support possible in a timely manner,
how does this plan sound to you
{Jack Turner} Sounds OK for me. Thanks for your
assistance.
{Leo M.} Thank you . Please do not disconnect from
the Chat session until I inform you that everything is
finalized. I am making arrangements currently to transfer
you to phone support. To verify your phone number, we
have it as xxx-xxx-xxxx , is this correct? In addition,
is the line free and is this the phone number you are
currently at?
{Jack Turner} Yes, the number is correct and the line
is free, and that is where I am located.
{Leo M.} Thanks for being patient with me .
Everything is taken care of for me to contact you by
phone within the next few minutes to get you transferred
to our Phone Support Queue. As mentioned earlier, I will
be sending you an e-mail summary for case number
SRZ040408001008 . Thank you again for using Microsoft
Windows XP Chat Support and I will call you here within a
few minutes.
{Leo M.} Thank you for using Windows XP Chat
Support today , I hope you enjoy the rest of your day.
{Jack Turner} OK, you too!

*****************************
Microsoft's response from the phone call:
Sorry Charlie. Pay $99 to fix the problem, or use one of
the free services (i.e. this newsgroup).

So does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem?

Thanks, Jack
