I tried to download Windows Defender (which I''m convinced,
doesn't do much) I got a mesage that Defender was already

prominently and a check box which, if checked, would have set
Windows 7 so that nothing else could change the "Default Search"
settings.

What, specifically, was the message that said "nothing else could
change the Default Search settings"?

I'm not aware there is any such setting.

i don't recall exactly what I was doing, I think it was when I tried
to install Defender -- ant goy the message "it is already installed on
Vista"
---yeah it said Vista --probably a leftover that didn't get changed whem
moving to
Win 7. A Microsoft window opened with a block saying "Bing".
Below that was a check box with the description "Check here to
prevent anthing from cahnging the default search program."
MS trying to nudge people to thrir "Bing".

I'm sure that controls whether or not other programs can change the
search engine, not that it won't let *YOU* change the search engine at
will. It's a security feature, and most modern AV and AM programs have
something similar.

MS trying to nudge people to thrir "Bing".

Since it's optional, and fully controllable by YOU, I wouldn't label it
such.

MIcrosft has joined the sneaky" baggage added "
installers. Yesterday on Win 7 machine I downloaded
Microsoft's "Defender (presumably an anti virus anti
malware tool) With the download, MS set IE as the
default search engine.
So now if I go (via a HTTP shortcut ) to Google --I first
get IE which in turn calls Google from within IE !
Annoying !! So my questions"
Where in the registry is the setting(s) for default
browser? And where is the setting(s) for default search
engine?? If I can find those I'll edit them back to
what I want!

Since you have been involved with computers for so long I am surprised
that you think that Internet Explorer is a "search engine". It isn't. It
is a browser.

Well --- I'm not so sure! Yesterday, in setting up a new Win 7
machine,
I tried to download Windows Defender (which I''m convinced, doesn't do much)
I got a mesage that Defender was already installed on Win Vista -- that's
what it said
-- and along with it came a window displaying "Bing" quite prominently
and a check box which, if checked, would have set Windows 7 so that nothing
else could change the "Default Search" settings.

To change the things you want to change there is no need to screw up your
registry, just do it in the same old way; namely, via Internet Options.

You don't need to download Windows Defender on Win7 (it is already
included). Download and install MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials)...it
disabled Defender (design intent) and once installed will perform the
same antimalware protection as Defender and additionaly provides
Anti-Virus protection.

Repeating the same procedure on a clean Win7 install did not yield the
same results.

It would be in your best interest to not try to remake Windows 7 into
what it was not intended to be.

Fyi...one sets (for IE) the default search engine via IE add-ons.
- Bing search is included with IE on Win7, if you wish Google to be
your default, download the Google Search add-on and enable it as the
default.
