Windows 10 telemetry secrets: Where, when, and why Microsoft collectsyour data
By Ed Bott for The Ed Bott Report | February 23, 2016
"How does Windows 10 telemetry really work? It's not a state secret. I've gone through the documentation and sorted out the where, when, and why. If you're concerned about private documents accidentally leaving your network, you might want to turn the telemetry setting down." = *An EXCELLENT article*! :-) http://www.zdnet.com/article/windows...metry-secrets/ -- David B. Nevertheless, when you want to get serious work done on a Win10 machine, you pull the Ethernet cable. That's standard operating procedure. And that has to do with control over Windows Update, not telemetry. Paul |

(It's not in the GUI for wired connections but can be done in the registry.) I haven't tested it, but the Metered Connection hack for NICs, has apparently been removed in the latest Insider Edition. So the writing is on the wall now. Right now, all file sharing is busted for me in 14942, so my interest in evaluating the Insider Edition, is pretty well at an end. On 14936, file sharing was busted in the "push from Win10" direction, but still worked in the "pull from Win10" direction. Now, my other machines tell me that the workgroup=WORKGROUP domain is not mine any more. Like Win10 became the network browser, and is dictating a new set of rules. But like I say, I'm not interested in hammering it, as they would only issue another OS upgrade and blow away my changes, change the "brokenness factor" and so on. This is what you pay captive QA idiots to put up with. I still have a Release install to play with, but not much motivation left... Paul |

I don't know why Microsoft is so adamant about removing control of updates from the end user. Though if that control is available in Enterprise edition, their end game is likely to push as many businesses as possible in that direction since stability is a real issue in a business environment. For home users I guess as long as they allow metered connections on wireless connections you could go that way. Wireless USB adapters and routers are cheap. -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Roger Blake (Posts from Google Groups killfiled due to excess spam.)
