Disable Local Account Without Removing It?
I added a local account for a friend to use while visiting. Now I would like to disable it without actually removing it so it could be used again in the future if needed. I don't want it to appear on the list of accounts at power-on. All I see on the Settings menu is "Remove". Any way to do this? Thanks. HG |

You must be in an account with administrator privileges to do this. 1. Start by pressing Windows Key + X. This brings up the power user menu. 2. Type "g" or choose "Computer Management with your mouse." 3. Computer management (compmgmt.msc) comes up. Look at the index on the left. 4. Choose the "Local Users and Groups" heading. 5. In the folder box to the right of the index, double-click on "Users" folder. 6. You will see a list of users. Right-click on the user you want to disable. Choose properties. (Or highlight with mouse and press alt-enter to get the properties dialog) 7. In the properties dialog, check "Account is disabled." Click "OK" 8. When you come back to the Comp management panel, a little circle with a down arrow should appear over the user account. That indicates that the account is diabled, and it will no longer show on the login screen. Alternately, if you're using a Standard account, you can launch an admin command prompt by typing Win+X and then typing "a" or choosing "Command Prompt (Admin)" in the menu. Type in the UAC password for the admin account and click "Yes." Then from that command prompt, type compmgmt.msc ....and press enter. This will bring up the Computer Mangement snap-in with the elevated privileges necessary to disable accounts. Then follow steps 4-8. HG You can also accomplish this from an elevated command prompt (Win + X, a) NET USER username /ACTIVE:NO that will disable the account. When you want to reenable it NET USER username /ACTIVE:YES -- Zag No one ever said on their deathbed, 'Gee, I wish I had spent more time alone with my computer.' ~Dan(i) Bunten |

For a Microsoft account, for instance, the username will be the first five letters of the email account used to create the account. If you are not sure what the username is, you can go to C:\Users and look at the name of the folder for the account. The folder name is username. -- Zag No one ever said on their deathbed, 'Gee, I wish I had spent more time alone with my computer.' ~Dan(i) Bunten |
