A PC program that will save maps and satellite view for off-line viewing?
Is there a PC program that will save maps and satellite view for
off-line viewing? Cell phones have at least 3 map programs, including two that also have satellite view, with which one can pre-download the maps so they are avaliable where there is no internet, like on the highway in the middle of nowhere. But the screen on the cellphone is so small (and I don't want to buy a tablet, if that would work, although this is the first reason i've had to want a tablet. Would it work? Regardless, I can't buy one until I get home and I need this for the 12 days left on my vacation.) So.... is there a way one using a laptop can download maps in advance for a whole region and save them on the hard drive. ( I don't mean just saving one map at a time.) The Android people (Is that offensive? I meant the people on the Android newsgroup) have told me about Mapfactor Navigator, and it's good, but it's very centered on towns and street addresses, and I just want to look at maps, and more importantly, I was hoping to find satellite view. Map view leaves out dirt roads and a lot of other useful information, like many buildings and their shapes which for me are landmarks useful in getting around. Frankly google maps are the best so far, in that in the US (and elsewhere?) , one can zoom in with satellite view one or two steps closer. But zooming is less important now than saving. |

Your government provides maps. Sample one and see if it has the info you want ? https://nationalmap.gov/ustopo/ Paul |

Your idiom suggests you're in the US, but in case you're in the UK (or travelling here) look at www.anquet.com. A wide range of meticulously detailed "OS" (government agency) maps, all downloadable at modest cost with free viewer, GPS-equipped. Beats the Bejasus out of Google maps. -- Phil, London |

If your are traveling you would find the Garmin very useful. The second one that I have on my Windows 10 Tablet and on my PC is MS Maps. It is available free on the MS store. It allows you do download maps to your computer for the areas you are visiting. Once downloaded these maps can be used off line. It is similar to the old MS Streets and ... (can not remember the full name.) I used it for several years. I can find the distance between two points. -- 2017: The year we lean to play the great game of Euchre |

I had heard some users claiming Google Earth was discontinued for Windows XP. So I thought it was dead for XP. Nope, looks like it still works. It's the plug-in and API that are no longer supported as of Jan 2017. See the discussion at: https://productforums.google.com/for...k/8PCwqEPzBAAJ https://superuser.com/questions/1021...-earth-offline It appears Google Earth will offline cache an area. I've not used this program but there are some online tutorials, like: http://freegeographytools.com/2009/m...gle-earth-data https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ic1cyOW2-2s You cross-posted to 2 different Windows version newsgroup - XP and 10 - hence where you want offline maps is unclear. On which one did you want to use offline (cached) maps? Windows 10 can run programs and apps. https://www.onmsft.com/news/google-m...-app-discovery I didn't bother to read up on the app to find out if it caches maps for offline use. The author's web site is styled like a blog which I detest. |

A PC program that will save maps and satellite view for off-line viewing?
| Is there a PC program that will save maps and satellite view for
| off-line viewing? | I built my own to avoid having to enable script at Google and to consolidate the whole thing. It's free, no strings. https://www.jsware.net/jsware/gmapkit.php5 Anyone can access the free Google maps API. My version is not as extensive as Google Maps online. For instance, you can only get a 640x640 JPG when you call the free API. But aside from that it's very convenient, putting maps, satellite, streetview, directions, elevation, map markers and drawing tools all in one place. You can move around like the Google online version. It will also save the images to disk or print. For anyone who wants to do similar, the API is online and the only requirements are that 1) the software or tool you make has to be free, 2) The Google logo has to appear somewhere and 3) you have to provide an official privacy policy. |

The author's web site is styled like a blog which I detest. I'll probably dislike it too. I can't open any urls until I get rid of some I already have, but after months of trouble with Firefox and Sea Monkey working better, on XP, for the last two days SM has worked perfectly. So I don't want to push it. But my bank flat out wouldn't let me look at my account because I need a more recent browser, they say, even though this is no more than 8 weeks old. And Sea Monkey isn't on their list. |

[] If you're thinking of storing a lot for offline use (maps or anything else [videos, whatever]), steer clear of those ones that have "32G eMMC" (sometimes shown as "32G disc" by the less clued stores). Or, at least, check how much free "disc" space they have in the store before buying, and compare that against how much your maps (etc.) will need, allowing for a _bit_ over for other things. -- J. P. I'm a long term user of Memory Map, but the maps are expensive. https://memory-map.com/ https://www.memory-map.co.uk/ I have the iPhone and iPad apps too, so walks/hikes/trip create GPS files which I then import into Mem-Map on the PC. From there I usually export GPX and open that in Google Earth. All my tracks (static and animated) feature strongly in my videos/DVDs, mainly family walking holidays. For trips to countries for which I have no maps (Italy, Austria, Germany...) I either calibrate my own from paper scans or online sources (including GE), or use Pocket Earth on my iPhone (with worldwide mapping) to make the GPS record and export that to GPX for subsequent use back home in Mem-Map.
