Cannot see shares in XP to connect to it.

I have a laptop and a desktop.Both running XP.

Objective is to get the laptop to connect to shares on the desktop. When I
try to create a shortcut on the laptop, I can browse as far as " Office" (
the desktop host name. ) But I cannot see any of the shares on " Office" in
the browser.. Several drives are shared out.

I can ping from laptop and get a return from the desktop both by IP address
and by host name ( NetBios name).

I am the administrator. Cannot even connect to a $ admin share on dektop.

I have tried eliminating all items in MSCONFIG/STARTUP GROUP to no avail.

File/Printer sharing turned on.

Any ideas? Is there a KB specifically on this?

Especially if running with simple file sharing disabled, are you using the
same logon name and password on both machines (not strictly necessary, but
you do need to have the same logons exist on both machines to make things
simple)?

Now that you mention it...the laptop is Pro, the desktop is Home ( or maybe
vice verse. ) But they are mixed. They are at another site from where I'm
writing. What on earth could that matter?

"Simple" File and Printer Sharing? Never heard F & P Sharing described as
"simple". It's just on or off. Guess I need to be educated about that.

Pro vs. HE matters because of the default, in the former case, and only LAN
security model in the latter.
"Simple file sharing" is intended make file sharing simple. It's a
changeable setting on a Pro box and makes a rather profound change in how
LAN shares are managed.

Run the networking wizard on both machines.

Be aware that due to simple file sharing considerations about the only thing
you'll be able to actually share on the network without jumping through
hoops is the "shared documents" directory, which is actually "All users'"
"My Documents". To share more than that you'll need to know exactly what
you're doing. But we won't cross that bridge until you can get the shared
docs directory to show up.

Thanks, Walter. I ran the network wizard as soon as I got out to the site
yesterday. After that I had no problem seeing the shares across the network.

Lesson for me to remember here is this: Windows XP, like Windows 2000 family
of servers that I am more used to working on, is very sensitive to the use
of the embedded wizards. Microsoft wants users to use these wizards and not
rely on manual methods.
