Is there a shortcut for Metro that I can put on my desktop so I don't
have to go to the side of the screen?

The Windows logo key on your keyboard, assuming your device has a keyboard.

I should have been more clear, sorry. I have the classic start button
installed, so, to start the start screen is now a 2 step process. Go
to the right side and then up to the button. It would be nice to have
a shortcut on my desktop to make it a single step.

BTW, I am starting to like W8. (I can't believe I said that)

Right-click on desktop New Shortcut
Paste this in:

C:\Windows\explorer.exe shell:::{2559a1f8-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}

This will display the all apps screen.

If you buy start8 instead of using classicstart, you can set it up so that

ctrl+winkey = start screen
winkey = start menu

or other combinations I can't remember ...

Apparently Microsoft will give it to you when Windows 8.1 comes out
later this year. The new Start button does absolutely nothing except
top go to your Metro screen.
