Simple cellphones are coming again
I've received an email from a local mobile communications operator with
simple cellphone for sale. I'm talking about the Nokia 206 for $49,99. They say it's better for emergency calls. Once I was nervous and needed to make a quick call but my mobile phone had so many steps to go for a call, boot, password, run phone app, turn off airplane mode, and then touch buttons didn't work, so I now believe it's essential to have a basic cellphone. Their price is increasing because people are discovering smartphones have some issues out there in the street. |

If you are looking for a simple easy to use cellphone, that is inexpensive look at something like the Samsung Gusto. It is about $20 at Walmart, and you can get a $100 dollar prepaid card for it a Verizon that is good for a year. So you can reduce your cell phone cost to $120/yr, or less if you keep the phone several years. I have had mine for 2 years, and it is still going strong. $100 is about 400 minutes of air time. |

Experts here have said Windows is not a good operating system. Microsoft is spying. |

I bought a $15 AT&T GoPhone for emergency calls, without paying anything else, period. Much faster than trying to use my old iPhone 3G. Easier to keep charged, too. They are also good for initializing a Sim card before sticking it into an iPhone, so you can use the iPhone as a prepaid GoPhone. And then the cost is the same, about $100 a year at maybe $25 per quarter. |

The have a contact list, (The Samsung phone can send/receive the contact information using bluetooth if you PC has a Bluetooth receiver) They have a calendar, a note pad, texting, maybe some simple games, and a "very" simple web browser. My wife does some texting on her's. I don't believe either of us has intentionally used the Browser. The very idea of a cell phone is not secure. Just to connect and maintain the connection with the cell there is a significant exchange of information. |

I got my cellular phone from T-Mobile for $25 I think. I bought 1000 minutes for it for $100, and the leftover minutes can be carried over for next year as long as I buy more minutes. So every year I buy another $10 worth. Leaving aside the first years costs, I spend $10 a year for my phone. I hardly ever use it. It's essentially just for emergencies when driving. |

Or if it looks like someone does not understand you have to offer assistance. Maybe I was slightly humor impaired |

After a month I changed to "pay as you go" and put £10 credit on it. I rarely use it so it still has some credit on it. In Germany you have to stick to a monthly deal for two YEARS before you can change to "pay as you go", which goes here by the very German :-) name "prepaid". |

In Germany you have to stick to a monthly deal for two YEARS before you can change to "pay as you go", which goes here by the very German :-) name "prepaid". Given that you presumably have to give name and address and bank payment details which are verified by the phone company, I imagine that this helps with the problem of criminals buying untraceable PAYG mobiles for use in the course of committing their crimes. I wonder if there is a cross-border trade in PAYG phones from other EU countries which don not have this restriction... I still have my very simple Nokia handset that was supplied with my Vodafone contract when I first took it out. I was still using it until about 3 years ago when I finally decided that I needed a smartphone. But it still works, and it does have the advantage that its display can be read easily on an overcast or sunny day outside: one of the big advantages of reflective LCDs over emissive LED displays :-) If only LED displays could be designed to be as black as possible in unlit areas and if they had a matt non-specular-reflective surface. When I was using my smartphone for reading an OS map on its satnat track-recording app while out cycling, it was very difficult to find an angle at which the phone could be tilted on its handlebar mount so I could see the displayed image, and that was with the brightness wound up to maximum (which flattened the battery much quicker than normal). |

I think it's because I was a very early customer of Tesco Mobile in 2003. I've no idea what they would allow now. The phone still works so I must have some credit or maybe I'm running up a huge bill!
