Format a blank DVD disc doesn't work ???
I need to format a DVD disc but the "Burn to Disc" that Microsoft referred
to when you insert the disc in the drive did not appear. Anyone know how I can do this with that program (I assumed it came with XP) or where I can get a format program. Thanks in advance for the help. I am using Win XP Sp2 w/2 GB Memory. |

Format a blank DVD disc doesn't work ???
Thanks for the info.
So I assume I can use Vista ? or MAC ? I want to format a DVD so I can copy a movie from TV rather than put it on a VHS tape. I bought a VCR which records to both. My DVD's are DVD-5 / 8X-4,7 gb. Do you think this will work for a 2 hour movie ? "neil" wrote in message ... Windows XP will not write to a DVD only CDs. Neil "Bubey" wrote in message ... Windows XP only had native DVD-RAM capability - no other DVD writing/formatting/erasure capabilities built in. However there are a multitude of programs (free and cost) that work better than the built-in writing capabilities of Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 even. More capabilities, better choices, more control... They burn/author CDs and DVDs and that is all they do - so they are good at it. Windows Vista *did* add the ability to write/author DVDs. Windows 7 maintained that ability. As for the movie size, etc - depends on so many factors - better not to discuss here. http://www.videohelp.com/ maybe... In any case - I would highly suggest you get a third party writing software of some sort. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

I am using Win XP Sp2 w/2 GB Memory. You do not normally "format" any DVD R medias. Any DVD-R or DVD+R disk are "write once" media and formatting these will cause these to not be usable. Windows XP does not natively enable writing to DVD-R(W) or DVD+R(W) medias. You will required a UDF packet writing tool which will let you create a "large" floppy disk if you wish to format a DVD before "writing" to it. There two main "UDF" systems are Nero's InCD and Roxio's Drag to Disk. Both of these are not "interchangable" (ie: one might not be able to read the other one.) Beside, these are "not reliable" and others recommend not to use these UDF method. |

For Windows XP, you need to be used a "third party" software as Windows XP does not do DVD-R / DVD+R "natively" As for "re-writing" DVD medias, You need to be using DVD RW medias as DVD R medias are "write only once." You will need to copy the files to a folder, on a hard drive, and then prepare a new "DVD" writing job, with adding any other files. |
