Desktop vanishes

I have a similar problem (vanishing desktop)

I use Windows XP Professional SP3 on a Dell PC.

A) Since Friday 15 January when I launch a program via any icon on my
desktop, all icons disappear from the desktop. Also I can no longer
right-click on the desktop to get Arrange Icons by/Show desktop icons.
When I press Show Desktop on the Taskbar my icons reappear.

When I go to the Guest account I do not experience the above problems.
Everything works normally there. But when I return to my own desktop
there is no longer any way that I can get my icons back. Only the
wallpaper is still there.

As far as I can check I do not have a virus or malware on my PC.

I reinstalled an image I regularly make of drive C: trusting that this
would solve the problem, but surprisingly this did not help (but
computer returns to the state described in paragraph A). Also running
PaulM script did not help.

usually you can do an
alt-ctrl-del on a blank
desktop

then launch new task
called

explorer.exe

if the above works out
then you are having issues
with the registry hive.

I referred to a similar problem raised by Nelsa on Jan. 13, which I can't
find back now. I'm not familiar with using a forum, and I do not know how to
get my yesterday's entry and this one into the thread.

To answer your questions:
1) my problem is described in paragraph A)
2) rebooting does not help
3) I use Norton360 with latest definition updates. I also ran the latest
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool
4) the image I reinstalled was made on Dec. 31
5) PaulM script was mentionned in the thread of Nelsa
