Default ie 6 has gone missing after update to sp3

I know that IE 6 is still on my computer because it comes up when I
click on Windows Update, BUT
after installing sp3 the shortcut vanished and I cannot find IE when I
look via Explorer.
Under Program Files Internet Explorer is listed with a few subfolders,
but none of those contain the file to execute the program--they are
mostly files for connecting to the internet.

Where is the program hidden, or do I have to go through a connection
wizard to get IE back where it belongs?

Since it fires up when I click on Windows Update, I suspect the exe file
must be around somewhere. Didn't see it under Windows (in Explorer) either.

Thanks for any ideas.

Do a search for iexplore.exe. It should be located here,

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

When you find it, right click on the file and select Send to - Desktop (create
shortcut). You can now drag or copy the shortcut onto your Start menu.

Good luck

Thanks. Found it via Search in an odd place. Don't know why MS took the
access off my computer.
It was in Windows\ServicePackFiles\386 and in
Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads etc.

It is not in Program Files\Internet Explorer--though I believe it was
there before I installed sp3.

Thanks

Did it disappear from the Start menu?

Something isn't right here. You should have a copy of iexplore.exe in the
Programs Files\Internet Explorer folder. If you're running IE6, Service Pack 3
is supposed to install an updated version of IE6, not remove it.

You might want to check what version of IE is running when you launch Windows
Update. Click on the Tools menu at the top of the window. Under Tools, click on
About Internet Explorer. It should say version 6.0.2900.5512.

I don't know enough about IE to say what impact it would have on your system if
there weren't a copy of iexplore.exe in the correct folder. It's possible that
simply placing a copy of the file in the correct folder would suffice.

That said, you might want to file this web site away for future reference in
case you run into any problems.

Mystery solved, sort of. Iexplore.exe actually is in the Internet
Explorer folder, but cannot be seen unless both hidden and system files
are displayed. I had displayed hidden files, but did not think to
display system files since I assumed IE was a program.

You may have found the file, but it leads to another mystery. You shouldn't have
to make any changes in Folder Options in order to view iexplore.exe in the
Program Files\Internet Explorer folder. It's not a system or hidden file. Having
it show up when running a search is another matter. For that, you'd have to
check the boxes under More Advanced Options to search hidden and system folders.

If Internet Explorer continues to work as expected, I wouldn't be too concerned
about this issue.
