Instead of asking that question, why not disable it while installing?

Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. Can't stop the service!

Install in Safe Mode. McAfee is such a garbage program in any case that
trying to install a Service Pack while it is running is a recipe for
disaster.

I'd uninstall that lousy AV then install SP3, and install a free AV
afterwards.

Access denied to stopping service in normal mode, although it will stop in
safe mode if you disable in msconfig.

That appears to be the only way, although I'm not into getting into a
discussion of whether or not it's a lousy AV.

with real time protection version 8.5.0i. Had no issues installing the
service pack 3.

Well - I can't quite determine how to connect to Microsoft Update site in
safe mode!

? Is that version number the number of the mcshield.exe file, which is the
real time scanner? I'm current with updates and my version is 14.0.0.349?

Download it first, install at leisure.

Enterprise editions of antivirus programs have nothing in common with the
consumer editions.

I'm glad that things worked out well for you. Best practice when installing
an operating service pack is to install it with minimal programs running
and in particular no antivirus running. The OP should download SP3 directly
and then install in Safe Mode.
