Default file names reversed

WinXP recently has started showing filenames and folders in reverse order
in dialogue boxes for saving or opening and when opening a folder.

This is very irritating and wastes a lot of time. In order to counteract
this every time I have to :

1) Go to the 'View menu'
2) Select 'Details'
3) Click 'Name' to force the list back into ascending alpha order.
4) Then continue my search for my file.

Many applications are affected, too numerous to mention.

This has irritated me enough now, that I have to do something about it - any
suggestions?
