Windows 7 Dell Inspiron D630 won't update to Windows 10

I tried to install the utility on a just-received handmedown Dell Inspiron
D630 laptop today running Windows 7 Enterprise:
Windows10Upgrade24074.exe 5,607KB

CPU: OK
Memory: OK
Disk space: OK
! Operating System: Contact your system administrator to upgrade Windows
Server or Enterprise editions.
! Disk controller: The current active partition is compressed

Googling for how to figure out the windows version:
Start Run winver
Windows7 Enterprise Version 6.1 (Build 7601: Service Pack 1)

Any suggestions?

The free upgrade is intended for "Consumers".

Enterprise VLK operating systems are not
entitled to a free upgrade to Windows 10.

Stay with windows 7. I don't see any compelling advantage with 10 and
after the last annoying problem with attribute settings I restored my
windows 7 from an image. If you do get to update (for which Paul says you
are not eligible), do create and image of the existing system first. I
use macrium reflect free version.

Thank you. I thought I hit the bonanza when someone gave the Dell to me for
free, but it turns out it was her corporate machine in 2007, and it
apparently had a recall where Nvidia gave the company the money back but let
everyone keep the computer.

Problem is that every day or three, the monitor fritzes out and goes all
scrambled eggs.

The class action suit is long gone (settled in 2010 it seems), so, there's
no recourse that I know of for that.

Initially I was trying to update the OS because I thought it might be
software, but even after updating the BIOS to A19 (2013), it still has the
problem.

Apparently the "ball grid array" under the GPU develops "cracks".
I saw the youtube videos on how to "reflow" them, but they're beyond my
scope.

Thanks for letting me know the free upgrade isn't for Enterprise versions.
Do you know if there is an easy downgrade to "regular" versions?

It's for a kid, and I just want the kid to have the latest OS but Windows 7
is actually just fine too for her needs (games mostly, & schoolwork, she
says).

Not solving your problem:

Back up your hard disk, download the Win 10 ISO, clean install Win 10!
It will be a lot less problematic than doing an in-place upgrade!

It's a freebie for a kid's first computer.
She isn't all that technical, so Windows 7 or 10 is fine for her.

The display was intermittently fritzing out because it has an Nvidia GPU
which was covered under a class action suite so the company let the
employees keep, in 2012, the computers.

So that's why it has Enterprise on it.
I still would like to put Windows 10 on it, just so that she is learning the
"latest" version, but, to me (or to you), there's nothing in Windows 10
(that I know of) that really matters (and there are some bad things too).

Anyway, the two problems now, both of which are unsurmountable so far a

a. Enterprise isn't part of the free accessibility upgrade to 10
b. Even so, the Nvidia GPU BGA has an intermittent crack somewhere

Do you get gumtree over there? here you can find local techies who do
reballing of PS3, nvidia etc chips. Maybe it's a craig's list thing
over there?

Since the machine is more than 10 years old, I may just borrow a Windows 7
Home from a friend so that I can install Windows 10 on top of that.

Before I ask to borrow windows 7, does that "use up" a license for my friend
though?

Only a clean installation will do the trick. You need to have your
Windows 10 License as this the first time you are installing Windows 10
on that machine.

You can download the full ISO of Windows 10 from Microsoft website and
install it on your machine without the serial number. After 7 days you
will be required to enter your serial number otherwise it stops working.

The alternative is to download the Enterprise edition of Windows 10 and
use it as a trial for 3 months after which you need to buy the license.

Anyway this is not the main point of this post. The main point is that
you can install Windows 10 on any machine as long as you are prepared to
wipe the disk clean and start afresh. This is called Clean Installation.

It's for a kid, and I just want the kid to have the latest OS but Windows 7
is actually just fine too for her needs (games mostly, & schoolwork, she
says).

When the Dell originally shipped, it had a Dell OS on it.
The SLIC table in the BIOS, helps such an OS activate
immediately. So the machine does (in effect) have a
license key for some other OS version.

You would search for the recovery DVD for that model of
machine, to put the original OS back. Or check to see
if there is a recovery partition still on the disk drive.
When the Enterprise edition is installed, it's probably
cloned over and just blows away the Recovery partition,
so there really shouldn't be anything there. Corporate
staff don't really care about the recycling of their
machines. When a "refurbisher" buys large batches of
off-lease machines, the refurbisher installs a
"refurbisher version" of Windows 7 Pro, which presumably
means a bit more cash for Microsoft.

So you may have some options.

Giving an Enterprise VLK version to a recipient, isn't
the best choice. I don't know anything about VLK rules,
but apparently some setups need to be "reactivated"
maybe once a year or something. Or, the computer has
to "check in" with a server in the corporation. There
may be some detail like that. And another possible scenario,
is "losing" the license if the OS needs to be reinstalled.
If you reinstall a VLK OS, there is a "ceremony" to activate
it. And if you're not in the corporate environment, you
won't be able to contact their VLK server and finish
the job. The VLK server will not be visible on the
Internet.

To me, the Enterprise OS "works", but the setup is
fragile and can lead to surprises later. Whereas,
if you can find the recovery DVD kit, you can
make a nicer gift of it. If the machine gets malware,
they can do the factory restore procedure as long
as you've set that all up and tested it.

In terms of used computers, you'd be surprised
some times, how cheap similar models are on Ebay.
In some cases, when your "old" computer has a
hardware failure, you can sometimes get an entire
Ebay machine, for the same price as buying a new
hard drive at the store. You could, say, get another
D630, one which wasn't corporate, and just grab the
hard drive to get the original OS image.

You might also check with local recyclers, and see
if they know of a local source of Dell disc sets.

If you use the "wrong" Dell DVD set, the main issue
is the wrong drivers being present. And perhaps
after reinstalling/reloading, it won't boot. And that's
one reason that, even though the SLIC will activate
multiple OS versions, the driver situation
might make things difficult. Intel has arranged
their storage ports for good compatibility,
so if the chipset is Intel, there's a good chance
the booting part of the operation will work. And
the OS can survive having the wrong video driver.
In which case, you can finish the job of installing
drivers yourself.

are you aware that there is no free upgrade to Windows 10 unless you
pretend to be brain damaged? Free upgrade is only available to people
who are mentally deranged. Microsoft call this people using Assistive
technologies.

ObNitpick: There is no D630 in the Inspiron line; that's a Latitude, and a
rather old one at that.

In either case, it's not listed on Dell's web site as having been tested for
the Win10 upgrade. Also, given its age I wouldn't be surprised if there are
no Windows-10 compatible drivers that would be required to use all of the
hardware features.

I've generally had good luck with installing Windows version x on machines
that didn't have drivers for x but did have them for x-1. For example, I
designed and built the master Windows 7 image on a D830 using Vista drivers,
and a Windows 8 master image on a Latitude XT3 using Win7 drivers.

Dell's web site has drivers for the D630 only through Vista, and (as an
example) the video drivers offered by the site are dated 2011. That doesn't
mean that they wouldn't work with Win10 but I would be completely
unsurprised if they didn't.

But this *is* a computer we're discussing, so who knows what it might do?
