Default WinXP Professional SP1 -> SP2 : progman.exe doesn't work

Hi,

after installing Service Pack 2 (English) on my WinXP SP1 system the
Program Manager (progman.exe) doesn't work anylonger (it doesn't start
at all). The progman.exe file that's still found in \windows\system32\
is a new version 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_2_rtm.040803-2158) 109568 bytes
long) compared to the one distributed up to WinXP SP1 (progman.exe
5.1.2600.0 (xpclient.010817-1148) 205824 bytes long).

Even the icon of the new SP2-progman.exe has been updated, but the
program doesn't work. Let me say there're still many users enjoying
Program Manager as an application inside the usual Explorer-shell or
even as the WinXP shell itself in place of explorer.exe .

Why is Microsoft distributing a non working progman.exe (with new
icon) with SP2 ?

Many users would be grateful to Microsoft receiving an updated and
improved Program Manager since the "old" one does have some bugs (but
can still be run successfully on WinXP SP2).

Thanks for your help.

Fabio

Hmm, interesting. I just tried running progman.exe and verified that it no
longer runs now that I've installed SP2. Must be a bug....

Regards,

Margaret

Yes Margaret, because it's another progman.exe inside SP2 . The old
progman.exe (I retrieved a copy of it from the SP1 backup files) still
works on SP2. It's not a compatibility issue, it's just the new
Program Manager to have execution problems. A word from Microsoft
would be ideal!

Thank you!

Hello, I also noticed progman.exe doesn't work on SP2. It's a shame, I was
used to it. Can anyone please forward the old progman.exe to my email
address? Thanks a lot.
