Deleting all HD partitions W10

Thanks pfj With the other OS :-) If you select "Custom" in the other OS, have a look around for various delete and create options. You don't have to take some lame "default" setup from your new OS. Using "Custom" you can delete all the old partitions and define new partitions. Then assign them roles, as the OS requires. By doing that, it allows you to even plan for "multi-boot" setups. Based on the properties of the machine, you also get to plan at this point, regarding MBR or GPT, legacy versus UEFI boot. I have my machine set to UEFI+CSM, legacy boot, and for a lot of boot drives, just use four partition MBR. For a data drive, I have the option later of making it GPT (which suits drives larger than 2.2TB in size). With modern OSes, one of the "selectors" for what happens next, is your BIOS level boot option. If you use the F8 (or equivalent) "popup boot" option, your install media can be booted in (unnamed) legacy mode, or there will be a notation indicating the DVD will be booted in UEFI mode. Once booted in the mode, that helps determine the install mode (UEFI as well). How you boot... determines how it installs... So what happens at BIOS level, is also critical to getting what you want out of the install exercise. Windows 10 itself, has many of these same aspects. You can custom install in Win10 too. You can delete partitions. Create partitions. And so on. And if you're still having problems, a copy of DBAN on a CD should take care of those pesky partitions :-) It arrives as an ISO, and using your copy of Imgburn or Nero or whatever, you burn a bootCD by the burning software converting the ISO to the appropriate boot format. You don't drag and drop the ISO file onto the CD, since that will result in un-bootable media. The ISO should not be "visible", once the burn is complete. There should be folders of files on the CD instead. Boot DBAN, and it'll clean off *any* storage device connected to that computer. Select single pass cleaning, as that's sufficient. Doing 35-pass stopped being necessary, many years ago. https://sourceforge.net/projects/dban/files/ ******* If the machine uses eMMC or an SSD drive or something, then you'll need different instructions for that. With rotating hard drives, we don't really care how many writes are done. With an SSD, it pays to be more specific about what you do to it. Same goes for eMMC - limited wear life. The Custom option in the installer you're about to use, should be an excellent tool for usage with an SSD. DBAN would be gross overkill for an SSD or an eMMC. With an HDD, DBAN takes time, but doesn't cost you anything in terms of wear. Sometimes the effects of the manufacturer using GPT on the drive, are hard to remove. The installer you're about to use may insist on doing GPT for the new setup, based on what it "sniffed". Using your heavy hammer DBAN, you can teach the storage device some manners. And then your installer will have a truly clean place to work. It won't be able to sniff GPT any more. Sometimes, the best tools for an overview of the situation, are unexpected ones. https://i.postimg.cc/q7MNDGC2/ways-to-view-disks.jpg Even though an old GPT disk didn't have any visible partitions on it, I've had installers insist the disk is GPT no matter what I do. For them, a little "cleaning" is required. From Linux (erases GPT partition table area) sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=1024768 count=200 would be enough to erase the pesky content. In Windows, you can use diskpart "clean all" option, but it erases the whole disk. And isn't as surgical as using "dd" would be. There is a "dd.exe" for Windows too, but the problem is not being able to run it from the emergency boot CD for Win10. On many occasions, I've used the dd.exe from here to take care of stuff. If you have a second computer, and can move the drive into your second computer, then this would be a lot easier to arrange. http://www.chrysocome.net/dd http://www.chrysocome.net/downloads/dd-0.6beta3.zip The first link there, has the README with how to use it. Or at least, it notes the syntax differences (the disk naming convention in Windows is different). Paul |

Thanks pfj Install something like Macrium reflect and image the drive. Archive it somewhere permanently, along with the install package for macrium. YOU may not like windows 10, but putting it back will make it a LOT easier to sell it in the future. |

A quick way to do it, would be to pull the drive and insert another drive in its place. Like say, a cheap SSD. There are some pretty amazing prices out there on SSD drives. Still big enough for a basic install of something. Flip the machine over and see if it has a drive bay. Paul |

The other OS may have an option to do that or to ignore completely what is on the disk. A rescue CD may have to option to "create new partition table" on the disk, and that's usually enough. If the disk was part of a RAID setup, things may get interesting, though. However, if you intend to sometime claim warranty repairs on that machine (or just sell it) you will probably need to restore the computer to its original condition, so you can either save an image of the disk, create a "restore to factory condition CD" or whatever is called, or replace the internal hard disk with a new one, hopefully an SSD, which will also make your machine much faster. Note that it is also possibly your new OS can coexist with the old one, but this may require a bigger disk. HTH :-) -- Cheers, Carlos. |
