Default Do you want to leave this web site?

Why?

Why ask do we want to leave when we closed the browser for a reason.

What is the reason for asking if we want to leave when we always want to
leave anyways? We never say no. So why ask?

The longer the browser stays open to the site,
the more "advertising views" get counted.

If you open to a web page, and only view it for two seconds,
the site receives *no* compensation. It doesn't count as a view.

The advertising they show, only counts if the browser
window stays open for a fixed period of time.

By hooking the "dismiss" methods of the web page,
and putting up bogus prompts or delaying your
departure, that ensures your visit earns them
their $0.01 (penny).

If you "click thru" an advertising picture, then
champagne corks fly and the staff on the web site
throw a party. As now they've earned $0.02. Don't
click the adverts, unless you want them getting
drunk.

it's not time based.

yes it does.

It is simply double-checking, giving you an opportunity to change your
mind or to say "No, no, no. I didn't mean to do that."

I'm not sure but I wouldn't be surprised if some browsers gave you the
option to turn that double-checking off.

Can you provide a correct answer for the OP's original question(s)?

The OP is a well known troll going by the name of Mr Knife and Mr
Sword. "Jim Wilkinson Knife"; "Jimmy Wilkinson Knife"; "Jym Wulkinson
Kunife" and other Nyms. He is trying to generate irrelevant posts on
this newsgroup. You have to be smart to know him. My killfile is so
big that I have resorted to using a SQL server. Just too many of them
around here. These are all jobless nutters looking for excitement.
They should start taking Ketamine to cure their depression and anxiety.

Paul proposed an interesting answer that seems to
make sense. Anything to get people to linger and somehow
show them more ads. nospam will never give you a useful
answer about anything. It's best to ignore him.

I've never seen such a message. I don't normally enable
script, but even when I do I've never seen anything asking
if I *really* want to leave. I wonder if that has to do with
tabs. If you close the browser there's no script-based way
to load new content. But if you decide to close a tab maybe
there is. I've never used tabs, nor have I written script to
deal with them, so I'm not sure.

Why the **** would you need an SQL server just for a killfile? Try a better newsreader. Even one that can killfile replies to me. Even one that allows you to turn that ****ing html off that nobody wants to see. Useless fool.

there is no single answer. any site can trap on a close event for any
reason. often it's when there are unsaved changes in a web form, but it
can be anything the web site designer wants. ideally it serves a useful
purpose, but most of the time it's annoying. it's also in the who cares
category. one extra click to close. big deal.

I normally see this for web forms. It's making sure you want to discard
whatever you've filled in the form, if anything.

I don't think it's a browser thing as much as it is an "in-browser" thing.
I've seen it and similar pop-ups on a number of the tech sites. Usually it's
a "Before you go, sign up . . ." for a newsletter, etc, and I have pop-ups
disabled. Just my 15 mills worth (not quite worth 2¢, LOL).

Hey Peter, if you used a proper newsreader then you wouldn't see
his html.

Why would I want o hide it? Html is useful, but not for his gay pretty colours.
