Default XPSP2 shared printer not accesable on 98SE

At a customer we have a local network with one Windows 98 SE computer
and a Windows 2000 computer. The printers all are directly connected at
the 2k machine, the 98 machine is printing on the shared printers
without any problem.

On the 2000 computer we now have installed Windows XP SP2 additionally,
on an extra partition.

The usernames and passwords on all 3 machines are identical.
The computername of the XP machine is the same that was used on 2k.
The Folders and Printers on the XP machine are shared as it was on the
2k. (same rights, etc, ...)
Drivers of the printers have been installed on 98

98 still can connect to any folder on the xp and 2k machine, but
printing is only working on 2k. afaik everything, except the os is
identical (Drivers of course are also different, one for xp and one

Make sure that the XP printer's share name isn't longer than 12
characters. If it is, Windows 98 won't be able to see it.

If that doesn't solve the problem, please reply to this message in the
news group (not by E-mail) with more information to help other people
understand the problem.

Can Windows 98 see the XP printer? If so, what exactly happens when
you try to print to it? If there's an error message, what is the
complete text?

did you install the 98 drivers on the xp machine under the properties of the
printer, there should be an option, maybe under sharing, can't remember.

In the Network Location the Printers arent visible, but the folder
shares are.
printersharenames are shorter than 12 characters, its the same name used
on the 2k machine.
after manually entered the printer shares they appear to 98 as offline.
the error message is, that there is not such rinter to print on, he
exact text, i dont have right now.

authenication issue.
