Default xp home sp2 update fails; restore required

I've completely formatted my pc, and reinstalled xp home from the original
dell cd (which is a pre-sp1 cd). The system installs and boots properly. I
then do the sp1 update from the Windows update site, and that works; the
system boots properly. I then do the sp2 update for the Windows update
site, and the system will no longer boot; it tells me to go to safe mode and
do a restore. I can then restore to the sp1 point, and the system works
again. Is this a known problem?

Thanks,
willie
