Internal/external drives
I read a day or two ago that I should probably connect my external hard
drive as an internal hard drive on my laptop. SAY WHAT? I never heard of such a thing. Is this something from a local opium parlor? -- JimL WHAT??? is this "Gotta be online" obsession? |

Is this something from a local opium parlor? Since you didn't give us a link to what you read or a direct quote (if you read this in meatspace as opposed to online), we can't really address this. The only way to connect an external hard drive internally is to use eSATA and I don't know if any laptops would have an eSATA port. Sorry. It was an oblique comment on a web site I can't remember. It's a clear enough subject - hooking an external drive up as if it were internal. But clear doesn't mean easy. Since I can't tell anything about it I was just hoping someone could tell me. -- JimL |

Is this something from a local opium parlor? This is not a product endorsement. I don't have a laptop, and no way to actually test this device. However, I've seen external drive mounted as internal on a Wintel laptop (my lead at FanimeCon 2009 did this). Using something similar to this: http://www.cooldrives.com/2ra01espccal.html Apparently, this puts an external eSATA drive on the internal bus through the PCMCIA adapter. No opium necessary. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |
