SFC after SP2
Do you HAVE to use an SP2-slipstreamed XP install disc when running sfc
/scannow after installation of SP2? I have a syrupy slow system which doesn't seem to be releasing memory properly or it is keeping programs running somehow on my system after I have closed them. For example, after I have closed Word, and shut down the system, I receive the WAIT message that the shut down procedure is trying to close WinWord which I thought I had closed hours earlier This seems like a problem which SFC cured for me in the past with XP and 2000 but now I have SP2 installed I cant imagine SFC will replace SP2 files with pre-SP2 ones if you run SFC with SP2 installed from an ordinary post-SP1 install CD but does anyone know about this for sure? Can you run SFC and then RE-run SP2 from its install disc to update any necessary files? |

The SFC will not overwrite existing hotfixes or Service Pack files.
SFC in Windows XP will look in Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 for updated files. The XP CD is only required for core files that have not been changed by subsequent Service Pack updates. As long as you did not delete the Windows directory that contains the downloaded Service Pack files, SFC will use the updated SP files when running SFC, even if your use the original Windows XP CD. MS-MVP Kelly Theriot has the explanation you are looking for. Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.co*m/xp_s.htm and scroll way down to "SP1 - System File Checker". 1. Go to Start Run and type: CMD , and hit enter. 2. In the Command Prompt window type: SFC /SCANNOW and hit enter. Have your Windows XP CD available. After running SFC: Go to Start Programs Accessories System Tools System Information View System History -- Carey Frisch Microsoft MVP Windows XP - Shell/User Microsoft Newsgroups ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "news.microsoft.com" wrote: | Do you HAVE to use an SP2-slipstreamed XP install disc when running sfc | /scannow after installation of SP2? | | I have a syrupy slow system which doesn't seem to be releasing memory | properly or it is keeping programs running somehow on my system after I have | closed them. Hi Carey I haven't deleted Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 yet although I have considered doing so at some time to conserve space. Is there no point in trying to run sfc with the slipstreamed CD to try to correct whatever is wrong with my system? I was reluctant to do this because when I created it (I thought) successfully, I then had to do a reinstallation of the OS and couldn't do it from that CD; so I had to reinstall from the original CD and install SP2 and all hotfixes; so I thought that there might be something wrong with the slipstreamed CD I thought I had created. Go to Start Programs Accessories System Tools System Information View System History (This shows NO HISTORY NO CHANGE. Does this mean that SFC didn't run properly? I DEFINITELY have SP2 installed as shown on My Computer-Properties-General!) |
