Default Ethernet data rate erratic

My home network links 2 XP Pro machines using cat5
crossover cable and both set to 100Mbps full duplex.
Using the nework monitor, large file transfer betwen the
pc's will start at 73% but will drop to less than 10%
regularly. This is particularly noticable with 1Gb
files. I have a suspicion that it may be due to packet
collision, but don't know where to start. Naybody have
any ideas on how to make the transfers more consistent?
