Default 32 bit in 64 bit Winn 8 machine?

I just bought a small, inexpensive (cheap??) HP 64 bit Win 8
laptop for a grandson. I doesn't run 32 bit stuff . What am I missing?
A setting somewhere?

Occasionally, 32 bit programs use 16 bit installer code.

And that causes a problem.

Just a guess,

Hi, Keith.

If by 32bit you mean Windows XP, Windows 8 will not run a program written
for Windows XP.

That's not right, Keith. Almost all WinXP programs, whether 32-bit or
64-bit, will run fine in Vista, Win7 and 64-bit Win8. The few exceptions,
as others have pointed out, are those with 16-bit components (such as
loaders).

Some DRIVERS for hardware will need to be rewritten to work in a different
OS. Your Bluetooth device probably falls into this category. Have you
checked with ASUS? Recently? They may have written Win8 drivers for that
device by now.

64 bit runs 32 bit programs just fine. There is no setting. Are you sure
the programs are 32 bit ? 16 bit programs will not run, like some old
games.

KenW

If by 32bit you mean Windows XP, Windows 8 will not run a program
written for Windows XP. I learned this when I bought an ASUS Bluetooth
device that was advertised to run on Windows 7. I learned that it ran
in a compatibility box on Windows 7, and could not be cajoled into
running on Windows 8. (In my opinion running in a compatibility box is
not running on Windows 7)

As I remember Compatibility Boxes was an upgrade to the basic Windows 8.
If your version has a compatibility box you may try to run it that way.

I checked with ASUS several times and gave up as I was getting the same
line.

I did get the Bluetooth device to work using the native bluetooth
software that comes with Windows 8. I probably should get back with
ASUS, but their people are more knowledgeable than I ;-)

As for compatibility with W XP programs I could get none of mine to work
on Windows 8, it was probably the installer problem.

Hi, Keith.

If you tell us the names of those "incompatible" Win XP programs, somebody
here can probably give you some magic ideas. ;^}

That's trolling for answers.

The most infuriating one was the computer side interface software for
the ASUS bluetooth device, but the W 8 drives worked with their device.

Most of the other programs were games and such. I play two games
Mahjong and Solitaire which have been replaced with W 8 versions.

Most of the primary programs have been replaced if they caused a
problem. If I have not needed the others they are probably not worth
the chase.

Thanks for the offer.

I would like to add a question. Is running a Disassembler on a program

KenW

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Executable

Binaries are marked as PE32 or PE32+, to indicate
32 bit or 64 bit operation.

And yes, you're right, running a disassembler,
you would see 64 bit instructions on a 64 bit
executable.

But for a quick look, sniffing the PE type is
all that's needed.

A port of the "file" program can do that for you,
as it reads select portions of files to identify
the type. There's also at least one VBScript
that does that sort of thing.

*******

The hardest part of using these packages, is making sure
they're in your execution path.

http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/file.htm

To use it, the invocation would be:

file.exe blah.exe

and file then checks the header of blah.exe
to see whether it's PE32 or PE32+. (I included
the exe on the end of file, to point out it is
a Windows executable.)

If you booted a Linux LiveCD, it has the file
command as well (it originated on UNIX).

file blah.exe

The Windows XP Solitaire runs fine on Win 8. So should any other program
written for either a 32 or 64 bit OS.

Yes. The major exceptions are some utilities and some games.
