Clone was successful; I ran a HDTune afterwards
as you suggested:

If I put the drive back in the Startech case it
should detect it now, correct?

Thanks,
Robert

You would hope so.

It should show up in Disk Management and everything.

And because Macrium cloned it, the identifiers should
be modified enough, so that it doesn't go "Offline"
by accident. If you use a "dumber" way to clone, that
is what happens. But Macrium does a good job of cloning
and helps make sure the disks have separate identities
(where it counts).

There are a number of disk identifiers that can be
identical. Even partition names could be the same if
you wanted, without a problem. But there's at least
one number the disk uses, if it's the same, Disk
Management makes the second drive go to an Offline state.

I removed the cloned HD and put the non-
functioning HD in the 8500:

I then connected the cloned HD in the
Startech case via USB port:

Your last transfer curve might work better on a USB3 port.
Maybe the 8500 has one, while the 780 might not have one ?

Now, where can we find a utility to list the identities
of those disks and partitions ? There's got to be more
to that than NTFS TxF.

sooner or later. ]

The last transfer was from a USB port, I was
trying to show that the Startech case worked
with the cloned HD whereas it wouldn't work
with the other HD and didn't show up in disk
management.

That's why I put the non-working HD in the 8500
to see if it would detect it and show up on disk
management then did a HDtune on it, and I followed
that up with the HD in the Startech case to make
sure it worked.

OIC, the HD in the 8500 that was non-working
doesn't have a partition name and isn't formatted
correctly. That explains why it didn't work in the
Startech case. Why not just make another clone?
That's what it was suppose to be used for anyway,
as a backup HD for the 8500 . That would format it
and solve the issue of a partition name.

I use the WD for the external Mrimgs.

Thoughts/Suggestions?

I misunderstood your comment but I
did use a USB 3.0 port (blue).

I missed your second comment and so went back
and put the drive online and it gave it a letter
etc. That's why it didn't work before.

How could a drive go offline? Unless I
did it for some reason and don't remember?

If there's an offline status, there's a good chance it
is "remembered" in the registry. It's less likely to be
recorded on the disk, or at least I'm not aware of a
storage location with that sort of information inside it.

The "diskpart" program has an "attributes disk" command
for a selected disk, but I don't think that really tells
the whole story.

Your problem previously, something led me to believe it
was related to NTFS TxF and Macrium. Once Macrium is
finished with it, there's been at least one reboot,
you wouldn't think that would be a reason any more.

So are you saying that it may go offline
again at some point because of TxF? Also
why is this not happening with my other
Partitions?

I was thinking of removing the HD that I
just put online and we verified that everything
is OK in the anti-static bag/box and keep
it in case I need it.

The cloned HD is in the Startech case and we've
verified that it works. So I now have (2) 8500
HD backups.

I was thinking, down the road, of cloning another
HD for the 780 and another for the WD backup(just
in case that ever went bad). To do so I would have
to remove the 8500 HD and replace it with the WD,
correct?

The 780 is easy, just insert another HD and put
the cable back in place (but to the second HD) I
should of thought of doing that with the 8500.

What do you think?

Well, you're an expert at this stuff now :-)

What more could I possibly add ?

You have way more backups than the average user,
so that makes you an expert.

I wanted to run something by you and see if
you think theres's any problem with it or if
it's OK. This is in the near future,..

Instead of removing the 8500 HD and installing
the WD to clone the new HD. I want to clone the
new HD with the 8500 O/S and then make a Mrimg
folder and create a mrimg for it after cloning.

Then when I do my monthly Mrimgs I do Mrimgs for
both the WD and for the new external back-up and
also do the 780 mrimgs with its own dedicated
external HD.

What do you think?

Robert
