Default DVD wont play movies anymore

My DVD player used to play any movie dvd that I would put into it. Now
for some reason, it wont play and after some research on google, etc, I
am pointed to buying a 'codec' or something like that. My cd/dvd combo
is a "standard cd-rom drive". It still plays/creates CD with no problem.
Any suggestions?

Will it read the files on the DVD using Windows Explorer? If not, you
might well have a bad DVD drive. I recently replaced one on my laptop
that would read CDs, but not DVDs. I searched the web and they said
that such a drive uses two lasers instead of the one I expected.
Replacing the drive solved my problem.

I would not replace software if the symptoms described apply to your
drive. You could mess up something that currently is good.

What is "DVD player" ?

When you pop-in a DVD movie does this un-named DVD player application launch
?

If you have a DVD movie in the DVD drive and you manually launch this
un-named DVD player can you can the un-named DVD player to play the movie ?

Perhaps it's because of RLM and using any program that could
duplicate it? Dunno - most stuff can't be copied anymore.

Why didn't you answer my questions ?

Well, your questions were a little incoherent and I wasn't sure how to
answer.

I think I explain about what my DVD player was/is. and I did mention
that it was a "Standard" brand of player, so you can see I wasn't clear
as to your questions. But never the less, thanks for responding to my post.

OK, I'll rephrase...

** What is "DVD player" ?

You say only "DVD player". That is too vague.
What is the make and model of the DVD Drive in your WinXP PC ?
What is the Default DVD Movie viewing program you use ?

** When you pop-in a DVD movie does this un-named DVD player application
launch ?

I don't see what's incoherent about the above. You only use the term "DVD
player" which is vague. To play a DVD Movie there will be one "default" DVD
Movie viewing program used to associate a DVD Movie disc in a drive to play
the movie. While there can be only one default, there could be multiple
applications actually able to play a given DVD movie. The question is
simple...
When you insert a DVD Movie in the DVD drive does the default DVD
application automatically launch to play this movie ?

** If you have a DVD movie in the DVD drive and you manually launch this
un-named DVD player can you can the un-named DVD player to play the movie ?

Again, I don't see what's incoherent about the above. If you have a DVD
movie in the DVD drive and you manually launch the default DVD Movie viewing
application does it play ?

For example:
Let us say Cyberlink Power DVD is the default DVD Movie viewing application.
If you have a DVD movie in the DVD drive and you manually launch Cyberlink
Power DVD does Cyberlink Power DVD recognize there is a DVD disc in the
drive and can it play it ?

Another question not asked is pertinent to the DVD disc itself. Is it a
standard DVD or is it BlueRay disc or some other newer form of DVD disc ?

-+-+-+-

If you post a query and someone replies with questions and you find them to
be "incoherent", please reply back and write "I don't understand the
questions". This way there is dialogue and discussion to get at the root of
the problem.

You posted a query for assistance in the vaguest of terms. This requires a
series of questions to determine if this is a physical, logical or
application related problem. Just responding to someone who says "install
XYZ application" does not get at the root of the problem.
