network won't work @ 100 mbps
Hi
I have a network of 3 pc's. 2 work @ 100 mbps, the third (of course the most used) only works at 10 mbps. If i switch the network adaptor to 100 mbps and recieve a large file the network stalls and corrupts the file. Tried all the hardware; is ok. Must be XP. Anyone? |

Different brand of network cards sometime have problems communicating
with each other. I have two 3Com 905c cards that work great with each other but if you take one out and put a Linksys in the 3Com will not communicate at 100Mbps full duplex very efficiently. Transferring large files actually slows down. The Linksys seems un effected. If I set the 3Com card back to half duplex transfer speed increases. My suggestion is try different settings on the card you are having trouble with. Start with "Hardware Default". There should be an autosense setting also. If neither are satisfactory try setting it to 100Mbps half duplex. There are also settings for 10Mbps full and half duplex. Test with a large file, at least 5MB and see how each setting handles the transfer. Use Performance monitor and set it to monitor the network interface, and select Bytes Sent/sec and Bytes Received/sec. You can see Min-Max and Average speed. The highest average speed is what you are looking for. gj wrote in message ... Hi I have a network of 3 pc's. 2 work @ 100 mbps, the third (of course the most used) only works at 10 mbps. Anyone? 2 things: 1) ensure you have the latest XP compatable drivers for the network card; 2) A common reason for a network to work OK at 10 MBit but become flakey or fail at 100MBit is an incorrectly wired cable. Is there ANY home-made cabling between the faulty machine and the switch? It is essential to wire the cable with a twisted pair for pins 1+2, and another twisted pair for 3+6. Best Regards, Ron |

I tried the cables; even switched them.
Tried more then one networkcard; the built-in (Dell I8100) and an E-tech. Tried the newest drivers........
