Is there a way to set up a shortcut in Windows 8 that works like the
CtrlAltShortcut that was so easy and convenient to use in earlier
versions of Windows? Gordon

Something in particular? I don't use a lot of those but a few I checked
did.

Where in Win8?
On the Win8 Desktop or Win8 Modern Menu

I'm talking about the kind of shortcut that was so easy to use in
earlier versions of Windows. Just hold the Crtl and Alt keys down
while pressing the designated shortcut key and the program or whatever
would launch with no further action required. I don't know where these
shortcuts were stored but one didn't need to locate them to use them.

I just open Win8 to the desktop mode, create the shortcut with the
appropriate Control-Alt-'key' and then use it.

That's what I've been trying to do but I can't fine out how to do it.
I get some other options when I open the desktop mode and click on the
item I'm interested in but I haven't found any option that lets me
create a CtrlAlt"Key" shortcut. Gordon

I can't begin to decipher that but you can add keyboard keys to invoke any
shortcut on your desktop or the Start/Programs menu. To do that...

1. right click the shortcut

2. select "properties"

3. click on the shortcut key window to activate it

4. press the letter key you want to use

5. click "apply"

6. click "OK"

Does that actually work? I have no idea because I've always used HotKey
Plus to make and handle keyboard shortcuts. It is MUCH more flexible.

It works. The program will start if you type Ctrl-Alt-the letter you
typed in step 4

Create the shortcut, rt. click for the context menu, scroll and select
'Properties', on the 'General' tab place the cursor in the box adjacent
to 'Shortcut key', press the Control key to enter 'Control + Alt +' then
enter your desired key. Click OK, Apply.

Hi, Winston.

Yer makin' Gordon too hard. ;^}

Just press your desired key. Windows will supply the Ctrl + Alt + for you.
Your "X" (or "x") becomes "Ctrl + Alt + X" right before your eyes.

Thanks RC. I don't create too many Control Alt shortcuts...just one for
iTunes and the other for Acronis and those were most like created back
in XP since I copied them to Vista, Win7, and now Win8. Learn something
new everyday.

Separately, I did remember this time g to adjust my clock for the
correct Time Zone !

And you did figure out that I left out "work" in "makin' Gordon WORK too
hard." :{

I don't create too many Control Alt shortcuts...

I don't either, anymore, especially since Win7/8 lets me just press Win+1
to start Quicken or Win+2 for WLM - or any other number to run the
corresponding program on my Taskbar. Who needs shortcut keys these days?

Thanks to all who responded. I finally got this figured out. I didn't
realize that one had to first create a shortcut then open the
Properties box for that shortcut, then select the desired third
character for the CtrlAltWhatever. I got my shortcuts set up and all
is well. Thanks, Gordon

I do similar but also reactivate the Quick Launch toolbar in the Desktop
mode for select programs and utilities (Office programs, IE, Control
Panel programs)
